There are many brands of guitars, but in this article, is about Epiphone Acoustic Guitars. As far as i can tell the Epiphone Company was founded in the year 1873 by
the year 1873 by a man named Anastatios Stathopoulos, the son of a Greek timber
merchant. But how the name Epiphone came about is discussed later in this article. Anastatios father wanted him to follow in his footsteps, but he chose instead to use the timber for making musical instruments, like Lutes, violins and lioutos, at the time traditional Greek instruments.
Then later began building Mandolins, Mandolins at that time were gaining in popularity in the United States. This was a smart move and his business flourished. Then when Anastatios died unexpectidly in 1915, his 22 year old son Epaminondastook
over his fathers business. Epaminondas went by the nickname "Epi" and he had an eye
for business and began to thrive in the industry. Later it is reported in the year
1923 that he had become so sucessful, "Epi" made himself president and general manager, and he wanted a "brand" name that would be his trade mark, and later unknowing to him at the time, would become a household word.
The name "Epiphone" was created when Epaminondas decided to combine his nickname "Epi" with the Greek word for"phone" and therefore created the name Epiphone. After adding Guitars to their product line in the late 1920's, Epiphone enjoyed a healthy rivalry with the more popular Gibson guitars for a number of years. A little about the Gibson Acoustic Guitars, and by the way the word Acoustic means an Acoustic Guitar is a name applied to any guitar that is not an electric guitar.
But don't get confused tho, because there is what is called an Acoustic electric. The only thing being, an Acoustic electric is that it is just an Acoustic guitar that has been amplified in sound, (Acoustic-electric guitars have the sound of an Acoustic, but are amplified electronically). (Ok back to the Gibson Acoustic guitars subject.) The humble beginnings of a company that became a top name in guitar production, got it's start in Kalamazoo Michigan. Kalamazoo kinda small city in 1894 a man by the name Orville Gibson began a pretty small musical shop, didn't draw much attention at the time.
But Gibson had a burning desire to excell in the highest expectations for stringed instruments, With his dedication and shared vision of other superb craftsmen, Gibson has excelled far beyond his wildest dreams. After Gibson's death one year later a man by the name Lloyd Loar, was hired by the Gibson company, renoned in classical mandolins and also an Acoustical engineer. Later the Gibson owners decided to sell because slow growth in the musical industry and were bought in1986 by a team ofdevotees, headed by Henry Juszkiewicz and David Berryman.
(Now back to Epiphone!)
After adding guitars to their product line in the late 1920's Epiphone was having a rivalry with the more popular Gibson guitars for a number of years. Then unfortunately the popularity of Epiphone Acoustic guitars ground to a halt during WWII when wartime manufactoring put guitar production on the back burner and to add to the problem "Epi" died of lukemia during the war. His younger brothers then took over the company and they didn't have the leadership as Epi had to keep the business afloat. Then by late 1950's things were getting desperate and then Epiphone extended Gibson an offer to buy part of the company business, an offer Gibson did not hesitate to take.
Initally Gibsin planned just to take control of the bass business, but ended up revamping the whole Epiphone company. Epiphone's reputation began once again to climb back into the realms of respectability that it has today. Epiphone acoustic guitars have once more become a household name! Epiphone acoustic guitars made from 1937 to 1956 are among the most desirable of instruments to today's collectors. They are considered to be among the highest quality vintage archtop guitars of factory manufacture ever made.
Among these most desired of collector's the guitars that are the most coveted are the professional class models that the reputation of the company was built on. Epiphone is an acoustic guitar organization from Gibson Corporation. The sound quality of Epiphone guitars doesn't let Gibson's name down. Gibson bought-out their long time competitor Epiphone and used it to sell a subsidiary line of lower-priced Gibson guitars. The Gibson guitars name, not Epiphone, sells much higher. The Epiphone Company has a history that spans 138 years and reaches not only across the Atlantic Ocean but to the shores of the Aegean Sea.
