What is LASIK?

LASIK, the short form of laser assisted in-situ keratomileusis, is a surgical procedure done to correct the vision. How doe LASIK surgery performed?

LASIK surgery is performed through an excimer laser. It is a high energy beam which is applied to the corneal tissue thus reshaping it. The surgery is done through computer-controlled laser for high accuracy and precision and the energy so transferred to the corneal tissue causes corneal reshaping by vaporizing a small amount of tissue equivalent to refractive power of the glasses worn by the patient. Any lasik laser procedure involve two steps. In the first step, a very thin and hinged corneal flap is formed with the help of a microkeratome. In a blade free lasik procedure even this step is done utilizing another laser called femto laser thus making it more precise and totally blade free. In the second step, the flap is retracted aside to expose the underlying corneal tissue and the excimer laser is used to reshape the cornea by removing a small amount of corneal tissue. After reshaping the cornea, the flap is then repositioned on the cornea.

What are the expected results from LASIK surgery?
