Laser surgery - Is it safe?

The painstaking pair of glasses or contact lenses may become a hassle at a point in time. People are often recommended laser treatment for eyes. There is no denying to the fact that people equally feel skeptical about it. Every surgery has an iota of risk associated with it no matter how trivial it may sound, laser surgery being one of them. If you are planning to have laser treatment then read this piece of information.

There are certain prerequisites of laser operation that you should keep in mind before you go for it. Please be informed that you will need a few days of leaves before you can resume work. At the same time, there could be few instructions that will be informed to you and you should abide by. It is extremely important to listen to the eye doctor for better and early healing.

Some of the things you should be aware before you go for laser treatment are:

  • Abiding by the pre-surgery instruction chart – You will be asked to let go of your contact lenses and makeup for a certain period like a week prior and post the surgery. It is recommended that you should avoid lotions, or perfumes in order to avoid any risk of infection post-surgery.
  • Experience light sensitivity – It is important to protect the corrected eye post the surgery. Most of the time, eye surgeons provide a plastic wrap around glasses for only day use. You will be provided with plastic eye patches and tape as well to give protection from rubbing and dislodging the surgical flap that has been created for a week after the surgery. You should have a pair of dark sunglasses with you because everything seems to be brighter after the surgery.
  • Minor anaesthetic and no stitches – The laser surgery is an outpatient surgical procedure wherein Lasik lets you stay awake during the surgery. Though eye drops are put as an anaesthetic to numb the surface across the eyes. The best part of laser surgery is, there are no stitches.

Apart from the aforementioned, you are recommended not to drive for a week or use any digital device like desktops/laptops/tabs, etc. In case, you do, your affected eye may get burnt. The operated eye should be covered and it shouldn’t stay open for a longer duration.
