Laser Hair Removal: Do’s and Don'ts

by Comely Laser Comely Laser Clinic

If you're tired of shaving or waxing to remove unwanted hair, laser hair removal is an option worth considering.

It is one of the most popular cosmetic procedures in the U.S. It involves a beam of highly concentrated light into hair follicles that absorbs it and destroys the hair.

The Benefits of Laser Hair Removal

The treatment is useful for removing unwanted hair from the face, leg, arm, underarm, bikini line, and other areas on the body. The benefits of laser hair removal include:

Safe for the skin. The treatment selectively targets the hair without damaging the surrounded skin.

Fast. The medically safe laser takes only a fraction of a second to treat the unwanted hair growth at a particular area and targets approximately the size of a quarter every second. Small areas such as upper lip take less than a minute while larger body parts such as back and legs take less than an hour.

Effective. Most patients have visible hair growth reduction after an average of three to seven sessions.

The procedure

Before the treatment, your technician will trim the hair to a few millimetres above the targeted skin surface. After it, he or she will adjust the laser equipment according to the color, thickness, and location of your hair growth and your skin color.

Before the procedure, you and the technician will need to wear appropriate eye protection goggles, and a  cold gel will be applied on the skin to protect it. This will facilitate laser light penetration into the skin.

Once the procedure is completed, it is recommended to use ice packs, anti-inflammatory creams or lotions, to ease any discomfort. The treatments continue until hair stops growing.

Recovery and Risks: The DO’s and the DON’Ts

For a few hours, the treated area of your skin might look red and feel like it's sunburned. This can be cured with the help of cold compressors and moisturizers. If the procedure is done on the face, you can wear makeup the next day unless your skin is blistering.

Over the next few session, your treated hair will fall out. Wear sunscreen to prevent temporary changes in the color of the targeted skin.

Shave the targeted area
. It is recommended to shave 1-2 days before a laser hair removal session. Shaving makes the hair follicles healthy and more responsive to the treatment.

Avoid waxing and tweezing
. The laser works on the dark pigment of the hair as these two methods remove the root of the hair follicle, the laser would not have any effect on the target. The damaged hair follicle is less receptive to the treatment.

Exfoliate your skin.
We recommend exfoliating 3-4 days after the treatment to avoid under the skin hair growth. It will also remove any damaged hair follicles that will eventually fall out after the session.

Avoid Sun exposure.
Protect the treated area from sun exposure,  both prior and post the treatment for at least 2 weeks to avoid sunburns.
