Landscaping Tips by Season

by Juan H. Environmental Specialist

First impressions are extremely important in all aspects ofbusiness and that includes the exterior of your building and any grounds surrounding it.

Many businesses rely on facilities management companies to maintain their grounds on a regular basis, ensuring the landscape is impressive at all times.

Regardless of who carries out the landscaping, here are some top tips to consider:

Spring

Winter can leave your premises looking a little windswept and untidy. The first task during the spring months should be to pick up any leaves and branches that may have fallen on the grass or in the flower beds. Summer-flowering plants, Lillies and Ranunculus for example, can be planted during the spring months in for summer.

Summer

Although we never really expect high temperatures during the summer months in the UK, potted plants are susceptible to overheating. If possible, keep potted plants out of the midday sun and stand them in saucers of water to ensure the roots stay cool. Communal gardens can be used as additional meeting or work space during the warmer months. It’s important to consider shading options, whether it is done using plants or canopies, to ensure the space is usable.

In order to avoid mildew, water plants in the coolest part of the day, allowing time for them to dry out before the sun sets. This will either be in the morning or late afternoon. The grass should be cut on a weekly basis. Long grass can be hard to cut and requires more nutrients. Nobody wants to see yellow or brown patches on the lawn!

Autumn

Autumn is a time to prepare the outdoors for the winter months ahead. Spring bulbs and bedding should be planted early on in autumn. Plants that are vulnerable to the colder months should be covered or moved indoors. It is unlikely that the garden space will be used by employees during the late autumn and winter months, so any furniture should be covered or moved indoors.

Winter

There isn’t a great deal to do during the winter, especially if it is a particularly cold winter. If it stays mild then continue to have the lawn cut but heighten the blades on the lawn mower so the grass isn’t cut too short.

Often during the colder months, icy or slimy patches appear on patio or paving, which should be scrubbed or removed with a pressure washer to ensure nobody slips over and injures themselves. Winter is also a great time to work on internal landscaping in the office.
