Land Rover Discovery: Tough and Sturdy

The Discovery is known for its off-road capabilities and its towing capacity starting with a 3,500kg. It has comfortable interiors and a high seating position that allows seeing far beyond the car’s front end. Whether you are driving on and off-road, the Discovery definitely offers a pleasant driving experience.

Land Rover Discovery I (1989-2003)

The Discovery Series I was unveiled in 1989 and was lined up as a family car, which was designed as a passenger car and fully off-road vehicle, with more seats and more luggage space. The Discovery was available in a 3-door model and followed by a 5-door version. 

The Discovery Series I came in a 3-door estate, 3-door van, and 5-door estate with 6 different engine sizes such as 2.0L T-Series I4, 3.5L Rover V8, 3.9L Rover V8, 4.0L Rover V8 petrol engines, 2.5L 200Tdi I4-T (diesel; 1989–94), and 2.5L 300Tdi I4-T (diesel; 1994–98). These transmissions available are 4-speed ZF 4HP22 automatic or 5-speed manual transmission with a 4-wheel drive system and a locking center differential.


Land Rover Discovery II (1998 – 2004)

In 1998, the Discovery II Series was released with redesigned exterior and interior. The back was extended to increase load space and can accommodate 7 adults with a more luxurious interior. The Discovery II series was using the same Integrated Body Frame structure with a restyled grille and front bumper.

Three engine sizes are available such as 4.0L Rover V8, 4.6L Rover V8 petrol engines, and 2.5 L Td5 I5 diesel engines. It is powered by a 4-speed automatic or 5-speed manual with a fuel economy of 6.0 – 7.8 km/l.


Land Rover Discovery III (2004 – 2016)

Discovery 3 was introduced on 2 April 2004 and is known as the LR3 in the Middle East and North America. The Discovery LR3 features a fully independent suspension, enabling ride-height adjustment by simply deflating or pumping up the airbags. The Discovery 4 / LR4 is a revised version of the Discovery 3 with the same Integrated Body Frame structure and a restyled front bumper and grille. The Discovery 4 models also maintain the body-colored bumpers and wheel arches of Discovery 3s. 

The Discovery 4 models are a 7-seater 4WD SUV with powerful and bold stylings in its massive frame, while on the inside, it overflows with a luxurious feel. Three engine sizes are available such as a 2.7L turbo-diesel V6 six-cylinder, a twin-turbo 3.0L diesel V6 six-cylinder, and a 5.0L direct-injection petrol V8 eight-cylinder. The engines are attached to a six-speed automatic transmission with an average fuel economy of 7.2 – 9.8 km/l.


Land Rover Discovery 4 (2017 – present)


The Discovery 4 3rd generation was revealed on 28 September 2016 and comes as a 5/7 seater. The Discovery 4 facelift for the model was launched in November 2020, which is marked as a 2021 model. The exterior design looks similar to the small Discovery Sport model with revamping taillights to horizontal from a vertical orientation, and the tailgate has been replaced with a conventional top-hinged tailgate. The roof is still stepped over the 3rd row with now a strong taper to the back. The Discovery 4 includes numerous changes and uses aluminum body panels and chassis offering a weight loss of up to 480 kg. With a new aerodynamic design and weight loss combined, a 17 percent lower Cd, achieving an improvement in fuel efficiency. 


The Discovery models offer diesel and V6 petrol engines: 2.0L Ingenium AJ200 turbocharged I4, 3.0L AJ126 V6 Supercharged petrol engines, 2.0L Ingenium turbodiesel, and 3.0L AJD V6 turbodiesel diesel engines. All-new Discovery 4 are fitted with 8-speed automatic transmission. Standard active and passive safety systems include Electronic Traction Control, Dynamic Stability Control, Roll Stability Control, Reverse Traffic Detection, Emergency Brake Lights, and Lane Departure Warning.

Conclusion

Land Rover Discovery maintains its luxurious, tough, and sturdy capabilities over the generations. The Discovery 4 proves this and comes with some attractive exterior design which makes it more appealing to the consumers. Added it's better fuel economy compared to other SUVs.
