Have you ever witnessed a place where time ceases to exist, everything around you coming to a standstill? Such is the beauty of that place, mesmerizing you and captivating all of your senses with its empowering surroundings. Located at an hour’s distance from Ljubljana, capital of Slovenia, is Lake Bohinj – the perfect definition of ‘a lake in the middle of nowhere’. While we know life in Kuwait for foreigners and locals is quite happening, there are always times when one needs a hiatus out of their tedious schedules. A vacation in Slovenia serves as the perfect retreat.

There’s a popular saying in Slovenia about the lake,

“In Bohinj, we're a day or two behind the rest of the world.”

And rightly so, nestled amid the vertiginous landscape of the Julian Alps, the Lake Bohinj sits next to Ukanc – a sparse settlement, that literally translates to ‘the end of the world’.With the landscape embellished by haylofts and tiny wooden houses, Bohinj is home to mostly shepherds who take their livestock up to the pinnacle of Mount Vogel for a graze of wildflowers and dewy grass.

The lake itself is a spectacle of tranquility, with waters so still that it is hard to tell where the landscape ends and the water begins. The peaceful silence tends to grow on you as you spend every passing minute taking in the breathtaking surroundings.

Standing at the periphery of the lake is the Church of St. John the Baptist. The Church is termed as a ‘mystery’ by the locals as no one knows exactly when the church was built, neither have they been able to decode the murals depicting a white devil sitting on Cain’s shoulder and angels that have vampire fangs. However, given the remoteness that Bohinj is subjected to, it is common for folk traditions to meld into Christian belief.

As one makes their way through the forests, villages, and alpine fields speckled with wildflowers to the foot of Mount Vogel, it is impossible to miss out on the picturesque view of majestic snow-capped peaks of the mountains against the milieu of clear blue skies with white, wooly clouds.

From the bottom of Mount Vogel, one can take the 15 minute cable car ride to the summit – where the concept of summer or spring is non-existent. The mountaintop now has a fully developed ski-resort, an added charm for most tourists.

Lake Bohinj is ridiculously close to the animated capital of the city, but is completely absent of the frantic animation of city life, which is why it forms an ideal vacation spot.
