Know What Are the Procedures to be an NGO in Sri-Lanka

by Ellen Ibbot Content Writer

AN NGO-Non-Governmental Organization is a group of people who voluntarily come together to help and save those, who cannot help themselves. Their main intention is to find solutions for their target audience. NGOs in Sri Lanka are beneath the National Secretariat for Non-Governmental Organizations. They are also directed by the Voluntary Social Services Organizations (Registration & Supervision) Act.

To get NGO Registration in Sri Lanka, you need to qualify and follow some steps. To qualify, you should have a clear motive, it should be completely Non-Profit base and you need to work completely off the government and on the charities and public contributions.

Why Registration of NGO in Sri Lanka:

One might wonder why registration is necessary and why it has been put forward. In earlier times, the registration was not compulsion and rules were pretty much liberal. But those who contribute their money to charities were worried as their money could be misused by those NGOs.

Thus, rule was made that each NGO has to register them so that they could work in a framework of government. This registration would increase the trust and security amongst those who provide funds for good reasons.

In Sri Lanka, registration of an NGO is a two-part procedure:

First, you need to incorporate your organization as Company Limited by Guarantee

In the second you have to apply to record your Company Limited by Guarantee as NGO.

In Company limited by Guarantee, there are no shares or shareholders in the company. Your company will become a separate legal individual once it’s registered. While applying for registration you should be ready with objectives, name, members, geography coverage, funding, and temporary staff, and permanent staff members, head of the organization, key positions, personal details, and NIC number.

You need to visit the National Secretariat for a final discussion for registration with the constitution of your organization. The constitutes bind you with the law and if you break any laws, legal action could be taken on you. After application, you need to wait for some months as your application will go to the Ministry of External Resources & Ministry of Defense.

After registering you need to follow some legal steps and need to take care of bookkeeping and audits and tax returns.

Once you get registered for your NGO you will be able to get a registered bank account under your NGO for your monetary purposes. It will make it easy for you to request donations and carry out supporters for your NGO.

Thus, with a clear objective and some preparation and pre-planning one can easily register themselves with NGO. The registration is important as it will add credibility and trust and you can get more funds easily and use them according to your need. The more trust your fund givers has in you the more easily you will be able to get funds and that is the main concept for registration on an NGO.

To register your NGO and follow the steps as mentioned above and wait till the approval and start working on good things for people for good reasons.
