Dot : DOT stands for "Department of Transportation". DOT is US government approved Helmet Standard for On road use.DOT approved helmets will protect you from 90% of impact types.US government is first test with all type of impact and damage , later they will approve.DOT standard Approved helmets can pass any other standard like SNELL or few others also easily. but SNELL approved helmets may or may not pass the
DOT test. US Gov. test Helmet by using dummy head put in helmets and then some test implemented in these standard ways.
- Helmet is Dropped from certain height (1.823m)
- Helmet is dropped into flat anvil from different heights
- weight is applied on helmets
DOT FMVSS 218 - It's Dot Standard type that checks performance in impact attenuation, energy absorption, and penetration resistance
SNELL : SNELL also a Safety Standards for Helmets. that is hold by Snell Memorial Foundation. it is a private no profit organization that is established in 1957 and is named of Snell is after William Pete Snell, a famous racing car (F1 type) driver who was tragically killed in 1956 when his helmet failed to protect his head during the accident.
Snell certification is not mandatory for the manufacturer but DOT must be approved.Snell is said to be more rigorous standard than DOT.
SNELL Test the prototype in manufacturer production process also but DOT only test on Prototype model only.
Every 5 year they issue new certification mode like M2010 is current standard. that have lots of changes over previous M2005.
ECE : the standard is developed by United Nations Economic Commission for Europe. earlier this is used in Europe only but now required by more than 50 countries
The standard is almost same as like DOT . but it favor more impact absorbent helmets.
