Know a little history behind Wedding Gowns

by When Freddie Met Lilly Wedding Dress and Gown Designers

Since ancient times, brides have made their wedding gowns an extraordinary and delicate prop that can go well with their big day and make them feel like a princess. Wedding gown designs have been there for as long as weddings have existed, but these gowns that we see today are quite a recent creation. Weddings among the nobility were of high political significance in the medieval times and were generally done to build a strong alliance between the ruling classes of countries amidst the never ending wars, trade disputes and border conflicts. As such, it made sense for a bride of noble background to look elegant on her wedding day, in order to advocate the esteem of her tribe and impress the groom and his family members.

The first wedding gown ever recorded in history was worn by Princess Philippa at her wedding to Erik of Denmark in the year of 1406. Unlike the white gowns that we see today, gowns in the early age were of made of posh materials such as silk, velvet that were decorated with precious sapphires, gems, gold and pearls. Dresses were majorly in purple, red and even black in colour and they were usually full gathered skirts with floor sweeping sleeves and long trains. As only the rich nobles could afford expensive black, purple and red dyes, the colours of Bridal Gowns Brisbane were rich in hues. Some Wedding Gown Designs were so heavily laden that the bride has to be carried into the church with the help of attendants. It was more of political reasons rather love for the marriage or any other personal reasons. The bride’s appearance on the big day reflected directly on her family, so expense was truly spared on her gowns to ensure she looked glamorous and royal.

On the other hand, commoner bridal gowns Brisbane were in blues and greens. Wedding was still considered as an important event for them and they would try to dress themselves in a more formal way. They would usually copy the wedding gown designs of the royal weddings and making it in cheaper fabrics. Blue was then considered as the symbol of purity in the middle ages. Thus, during those times, brides and grooms used to wear blue ribbons at wedding ceremonies.

Although white gowns and many other styles such as Boho Wedding Dresses are quite recent inventions, there were historical instances where white gowns were worn in the medieval times. Princess Phillipa, daughter of King Henry IV, wore a tunic and mantle of white satin fabric, rimed with ermine and velvet, at her royal wedding. White bridal gowns are now being considered as the conventional colour of wedding gowns. Although brides can still go for wedding gown designs that has different colours but white has now become a standard colour. There are many Wedding Dress Designers Brisbane who can help you choose the right wedding gown in today’s time. Make sure you choose a gown which can meet your specific requirements and help you achieve the look you ever wanted.
