Maximize your Twitter SEO

We talked last night about twitter marketing, keywords and hashtags. I noticed that some people don’t know what hashtags are and how to use them. When you read the title you may wonder why I used ‘#’ in front of keywords and hashtags and I am sure you saw it also in some tweets. When you tweet you can use normal keywords and keywords with the hashtag. Using hashtags let people find specific keywords and topics more easily. These hashtags are often misunderstood by new twitter user.

What are Keywords?

I think we all know keywords and how to find specific keywords related to the article and blog with the Google keyword tool.

What are Hashtags?

‘#’ symbol

The # symbol is used in twitter to categorize topics and keywords. Hashtagged words in Tweets can be clicked and show you other Tweets related to that topic or keyword. Most times the hashtags stands at the end of a Tweet but you can put it at any place you want. I would recommend to use only two per Tweet. #Dont #Spam #around #with #hashtags and use only relevant keywords on your Tweet.

Example: Business meets social networks at #APSense http… (no space between hashtag and keyword!)

People can now search for #APSense and they are able to follow the specific conversation. Let’s check now how it looks like. There are many tools to help you with hashtags. Click on on PageTour for an example or click on APSense below to see the results.

I use Twubs to find #APSense <--

Short Links & URL’s

You already use a site to shorten your URL, right? Did you know you can use a keyword in your short URL? Especially for Twitter it is a great opportunity to brand your URL.  Depending on the URL service you have one or two extra keywords.

Example: URL shortened with APSense (http://apsense.cc/c41347 - This article)

Add a slash and your related keyword at the end of the shortened URL you got. http://apsense.cc/c41347/Hashtags

You got another keyword in your Tweet. This can also be used in blogs or websites.

There are some URL shorten services where you can add any sub domain you want. Here we can add two keywords. When we have xshorturl.xx/123 we make it  Hashtags.xshorturl.xx/123/What-are-Hashtags

Conclusion

You should use hashtags whenever you can but don’t spam or overdo it. Using right hashtags related to your Tweet and adding you short URL with a specific keyword will increase your SEO on Twitter and you achieve better results with your Twitter marketing.
