Key Characteristics of Using Zinc for Die Casting

by China Casting China Casting

Many businessmen often overlook zinc because it is a bit heavier than compared to aluminum or magnesium. In short, weight is probably the only drawback of using zinc for die casting. However, if you compare the pros and cons of China Zinc Die Casting, you’ll know that it is also a great alternative. Continue reading the article to explore the key characteristics of China Zinc Die Casting in order to find out how it can be beneficial for your business.

Before that, let’s first understand the zinc die casting process. It is a metal casting process characterized by injecting molten metal into predesigned steel molds under high-pressure. Major attributes of using zinc for die casting have been explained here to help you understand the importance of using zinc for die casting.

1.     No doubt that zinc is heavier than both the aluminum and magnesium, but if compared to other alternatives, then it is not that heavy. On this note, weight should not be a big concern to you because it provides many other advantages.

2.     Probably the most significant advantage of using zinc for die casting is that it provides superior castability. Describing in simple terms, zinc is a fluid alloy and hence, it is possible to build complex castings with it. Apart from that, zinc die castings don’t require additional expenses on secondary operations, while aluminum and magnesium alloys require additional work for surface finishing. Thus, it is a cost-effective way to build complex metal alloys.

3.     Investing in high-end tools and machinery is major upfront cost in the die casting process. Tools used for production are of heat-treated steel, which means that the overall tooling cost will be lesser due to a lower melting point of zinc. This is because the tools used for manufacturing zinc alloys may last up to 5-10 times longer than the tools used for aluminum or magnesium alloys.

4.     With the ability to be cooled faster than aluminum and magnesium, zinc provides faster cycles. Moreover, zinc alloys remain stiff and strong at room temperature. Thus, strong castings can be built at a very fast speed. However, you should use high-end tools for this.
