“Prevention is better than cure.”

When we talk about construction, constructability review is the required prevention. In the late 1970s, there was an industry push for establishing a more efficient method of project management to tackle engineering and construction goals. This is when constructability was born.

Constructability review is one of the major parts in a construction project. The main purpose of the constructability review is to review all the construction processes from start to finish during the pre - construction or at the early design phase. It helps to identify and solve different types of problems before the actual construction begins and helps to minimize errors, delays and overhead. The review has the potential to produce a far better, quicker, economical and safer way to construct a project.

The practice of constructability in project management is still relatively unpopular. There is a lack of awareness about the importance of constructability review. 90% of the contractors don’t use it in their project management. Thus, it is important to highlight its key benefits:

1. Provides you an overview

Construction projects are the largest human endeavors and achievements since the dawn of time. From the Eiffel tower to the Hubble telescope, everything was planned and created. This highlights the importance of having an overview of any project.

2. Reduces time and cost

The benefits of constructability reviews are both physical and conceptual. It helps in completing a project quickly and this not only gets everyone a rewarding payday, but also fortifies the reputation of the party involved in the project.
It has the ability to save time and cost. By using the most spartan of equipment and materials instead of costly, it makes the project more budget friendly.

3. Helps in attaining the desired goals

Constructability helps in determining the most efficient means of construction while still achieving design goals. Moreover, it ensures that the lowest level of environmental impact occurs during construction.

4. Reduces chances of errors

It reduces the chances of error as you can review and alter almost everything prior to the construction beginning.

1. You can calculate whether the project is on schedule or falling behind.
2. You can check whether design expectations are being met.
3. You can check how construction waste is being managed.
4. You can review if there is any extraneous, non-essential equipment being used during site construction.
