With surfaces formed from materials like granite, travertine, marble, onyx and slate, natural stone showers have a unique beauty that makes them an appealing alternative to showers crafted from man-made materials, but they do require special care. The constant moisture and steam caused by showering can spur the growth of mold and mildew, so homeowners will need to take action to keep their natural stone shower clean and mold-free.

Choosing the Right Products
It is critical that homeowners choose their weapons carefully when combating mold growth on a natural stone shower. Many standard shower cleaners will damage the stone's surface, causing etching, hazing, streaking or pitting. The use of popular homemade cleansers that contain lemon, vinegar and other acidic substances is likely to cause similar problems. To eliminate the mold without harming the stone, it is necessary to use an alkaline or neutral cleanser. Choosing a cleanser made specifically for natural stone is often the best bet.

Getting Rid of Existing Mold
If a natural stone shower is already exhibiting signs of mold or mildew, then the first challenge is getting rid of it. Many homeowners find that a diluted bleach solution containing one part bleach and one part water will get the job safely. After testing the solution in a small, inconspicuous area to ensure that it does not affect the stone negatively, apply it to the shower with a bristle brush or nylon pad. After letting the solution sit for about 15 minutes, rinse the stone with clean water.

Sealing Out Mold
Once the mold is gone, using a water-based stone sealer can help prevent it from returning. Spray sealers designed specifically for natural stone can be applied quickly and easily and are a fantastic way to keep stains, soap scum, hard water deposits, mold and mildew at bay. It is important to note that the seal does not last forever; regular applications are required. When water begins to penetrate the stone's surface and darken its color, then it is time to reseal the surface.

Preventing Future Mold Outbreaks
While applying a sealer to natural stone is an important initial step in thwarting mold growth, regular cleaning with a cleanser that is appropriate for natural stone is vital. Even if the label says a product is safe to use on natural stone, testing it on a small area first is always smart. After verifying that the chosen product can be used with causing harm, use it regularly. Because mold needs moisture to grow, developing habits that allow the natural stone shower's walls to dry more quickly will also deter mold growth. Many people elect to use a squeegee to remove excess water from the natural stone shower's walls after showering. For those who do not have the time or inclination to do that, leaving the shower door open and the bathroom's ventilation system running will also help the stone to dry more rapidly.

Mold is more than ugly. It is a potential health hazard, so any signs of mold should be addressed promptly. Removing mold from a natural stone shower does require special care, but it can be done without damaging the delicate stone surfaces. Homeowners can also be proactive and prevent future mold by sealing the stone and using appropriate cleaning techniques.
