Kashmir Offbeat Places

The words of the Mughal emperor Jehangir still echo through the valleys of Kashmir - If there is heaven on Earth, here it is. Besides popular destinations like Gulmarg and Sonmarg, Kashmir has many offbeat destinations which are yet unexplored and yet so beautiful. For tourists looking to explore pristine places and find quietude, these places turn up as a great opportunity.

Let’s explore the 7 most beautiful, offbeat places in Kashmir which might provide you with a worthwhile retreat.

1. Baisaran valley

After a 7.5 km trek from Pahalgam Valley, you will stumble upon a valley surrounded by Pine meadows and tall mountains. The rhododendrons freshening up in the spring bring a beautiful fragrance to the valley. The area's serene beauty would get a thought to your mind - this is mini-Switzerland of Kashmir

You can do activities like horse riding, sledging and sliding in the area. The trek brings you to points from where you can see Pahalgam Valley and Kashmir Valley in their full view.

2. Yusmarg

Also known as the meadow of Jesus, Yusmarg is a pristine beauty, unknown to many. The meadow is said to have been visited by Jesus, named later in his name. Bejeweled by the flowing Dudhganga river, Yusmarg lies in the lap of the Pir Panjal and Tatakooti peaks.

If you are looking for an offbeat destination which looks like Gulmarg but offers peace and solitude with less footfall, Yusmarg Kashmir might be the place for you.

3. Gurez valley

The Gurez valley is the most beautiful places on earth. The surprise however is that not many people visit this beautiful valley. The area is sensitive, where one ridge away starts the border of Pakistan.

Kishanganga river flows through Gurez valley. It is a popular activity in the area to set up a camp beside the flowing river and taste natural spring water the whole day.

4. Chatpal

Chatpal is an offbeat village in the South of Kashmir in the Shangus district. The village has all a city-intoxicated individual looks for while searching for a respite - heavenly mountains, flowing rivers and green forests. The village offers a close observation of the local life of Kashmir.

The best part about it is that there is no electricity in the village. If you are looking for a forceful separation from technology, Chatpal is what you need.

5. Aru valley

Aru valley is famous as the base camp for the Tarsar-Marsar trek. However, it is no wonder that many people abandon the hike and just spend their whole time in the valley, mesmerised by its beauty. Located at a 12 km distance from Pahalgam, Aru valley is famous for its skiing expedition.

However, the unexplored beauty of the snaking away Lidder river in the valley makes it one of the most beautiful offbeat destinations in Kashmir.

6. Tulail valley

Tulail Valley is in Gurez and is the last village in India bordering Pakistan. The remote location of the village, situated at over 9000 ft above sea level and the destinations crossed while driving along the Kishanganga river make Tulail a luring destination.

However, surprisingly the village is mainly unexplored and villages like Barnai and Zargai passed while reaching it remain hidden beauties, waiting to be visited.

7. Karnah

Surrounded by the peaks of Nanga Parbat and Qazi Nag and situated in the laps of the Shams Bari and Kranii mountains, Karnah is a spectacular valley, 86 km away from Kishtwar. The inhabitants of the valley represent a 5000-year-old civilisation.

The beauty and culture of the valley make it a favourite spot for a honeymoon. The valley is replete with forts, utensils, statues and weaponry of the ancient era.

These areas can also be explored along with the popular destinations’ tour of Kashmir. You can add them to your itinerary and explore one by one the hidden jewels of heaven.
