About the Kannada University
The Kannada University also known as the Hampi University was formed by the Karnataka Government in 1991 under the Kannada University Act. The demand to start such a University was there from the mid-1980s but the University was established in 1991. The Karnataka government framed a Commission under Sadashiva Wodeyar as the chairman, to fulfil the demand. Post consulting with various intellectuals, political thinkers, education experts, social activists and various other representatives, the committee came out with a report and thus the University was established. The University is located near the historical place of Hampi in the Karnataka state. The Public University was initially founded to promote and develop the Kannada traditions and language, culture, folklore and literature of the state. The University caters many regular courses in teaching along with a number of distance education courses and few other innovative regular courses.
