If yo uhave nay interest in Elder Scrolls Online at all, you will have heard of ZeniMax's deision to release an Imperial edition, only available before the ESO release date. This imperial edition comes with a selection of unique digital content and costs about $40 more than the standard edition. The Imperial edition is also divided into digital and retail editions, with the retail version including some physical goodies not available anywhere else. ZeniMax has promised that all the goodies (digital and physical) in the Imperial edition are exclusive.

Obviously, ZeniMax created the Imperial edition hoping to sell more game copies, and convince players to cough up extra dough for the exclusives. They aren't the first to try this kind of marketing stunt, and they won't be the last. The real question is, are those exclusives worth the extra money ZeniMax is asking for.

Imperial Edition Digital Version Goodies

Probably the biggest gimmie of the Imperial edition is the chance to play an Imperial. Imperial is a tenth race exclusive to the Imperial edition, and can play in any alliance. No details of the Imperial race have been released, but ZeniMax has assured players that the new race is balanced with the others and will no give Imperial players an unfair advantage. Imperial players will, however, get access to unique abilities that none of the other races have.

Also in the Imperial edition is the Imperial white horse. This mount is available immediately, meaning players don't need to grind to get a mount, and is (again) exclusive to the Imperial edition. It does not, however, have any unique abilities or bonuses.

Opinion is divided on the third Imperial exclusive, the Mudcrab vanity pet. Some players want to know what ZeniMax was thinking making one of the most annoying parts of the TES world into a vanity pet, others love the idea. Love 'em or hate 'em, if you buy the Imperial edition, you're getting one.

The final digital goodie is the Rings of Mara. Apparently ZeniMax is pretty up on just how many couples enjoy playing MMOs together (hard to miss when there have been people who met and eventually married in almost every MMO ever to exist). Mara, a Tamriel goddess of Love, will bestow two rings on the players who purchase the Imperial edition. Share one of these rings with a special friend to get experience bonus and other buffs when playing together.

Imperial Edition Retail Version Goodies

The retail version of ESO Imperial edition includes all the digital goodies found in the digital edition, plus a few physical goodies. The most eye-catching of these is the 12” statue of Molag Bal, a Daedric prince of domination and enslavement, and the ultimate enemy of ESO. It also includes a complete map of Tamriel, and a copy of the Emperor's Guide to Tamriel, 224 illustrated pages containing notes from the Imperial scholar Flaccus Terentius.

For fans of TES' extensive world building, it's hard to guess whether the guide or the map will be the most appealing goodie, and players who might be ble to resist the lure of an exclusive race or mount maynot be able to resist the temptation of these intriguing bonuses. Which is, of course, part of the point.

And as tempting as many of these goodies are, most players will still be waiting until the ESO release date t opick up their copies of the standard edition ESO.
