Billings every year more than 1, 000 children in montana fall victim to child
abuse and neglect. "The numbers in montana have been going down as far as child
abuse and neglect cases,"Explains executive director of the family tree center,
stacy dreessen. "Most often with child abuse and neglect, parents don't intend
to abuse their kids. They don't want to abuse their kids. Most often they're
stressed because of possibly jobs or income or financial situations. "The family
tree center offers a number of programs, including home visiting, parenting
classes, and a form of childcare. "We also have free childcare where we offer
parents just a break, once a week, so that they can go and do whatever they need
to do just to take care of themselves,"Dreessen says.Family support network is
another agency in billings and has a contract with the montana state department
of family services. "There might be a family that's been reported because
there's concerns, but it's not a situation where the children are going to be
removed,"Explains family support network executive director, wendy ochs. "We can
go into the home, work with the family, teach them parenting skills, connect
them with resources, give them what they need so they can safely keep their
children at home. "Data shows that more than 80 percent of the families involved
with family support network did not return back to the system. "It's a great
result,"Ochs says. "It shows that they were involved, they got some help, they
learned some skills, and there weren't abuse or neglect cases down the road. "
