Jennifer Garner on Her Panic Attack-Inducing Oscars Dress

The actress appeared on the Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon on Wednesday night and wound up talking about that black Atelier Versace one-shoulder gown she wore to this year’s Academy Awards, confessing that while it may have looked like it was all effortless glamour, she was in fact living inside her own personal dress-shaped hell.

Despite the fact that this dress was custom-made for her, according to Garner, since she doesn’t have a waist anymore, they had to completely construct one out of metal. “What they do is they move your organs around,” she told Fallon, “basically, there are two men who come in with screw guns and they screwed me into a metal corset … and the next thing you know my ribs were compressed!” When Fallon, inquired if it was anything like Spanx, she quickly corrected him, “No, dude, it’s so intense. There’s metal inside it and these people just move your ribs and they move your liver to the side.”

If that wasn’t bad enough, Garner continues that four hours in, during the Oscars telecast, “I had a panic attack in my ribs, I was having a muscle spasm.” Naturally her first instinct was to stand, but her best friend and date for the evening warned her people would think she was pulling a Kanye and protesting the ceremony.

Thankfully she was able to quietly slip backstage, but as to what happened once she realized she had to go to the bathroom, well, we’ll let her finish that story. All we’ll say is, it was “worse than a toddler in a snowsuit.”

The actress then went on to play a new game called “Truth or Door” against Cuba Gooding Jr. where they each had to reveal a secret about themselves or take on a dare hidden behind one of three doors. Cuba gamely dressed up as a cowboy, while Jen was asked to hold three frozen water balloons for the remainder of the game. But after the ordeal she went through at the Academy Awards, Garner can handle anything.
