Is your iPhone X Waterproof or Water Resistant? All You Need to Know

by Viola Halle Consultant

Is there any difference between waterproof and water-resistant? And why is this important to know the answer to this question, if you are an iPhone X user. The answer to this question is that yes there is a difference in both terms. And the definition of both is as follows:

Waterproof

Anything that is impervious to water. That keeps out water completely. That is manufactured in order that water won't penetrate.

Water Resistance

Anything that is able to resist the penetration of water to a certain degree, But not entirely.

iPhone X Waterproof Rating

Apple refers to its phones as “splash, water, and dust resistance”. And they use a rating system to describe the extent of resistance their different models have. The iPhone X waterproof rating is IP67. This means under a controlled laboratory environment iPhone X can be submerged underwater to a depth of 1 meter (3 Feet) for up to 30 minutes.

Apple Warranty policy for Liquid Damage

As the water resistance tests are done under a controlled environment, Apple specifically advises not to submerge your iPhone X underwater. Unfortunately, your iPhone X is not protected from liquid damage under Apple’s warranty.

So, you are strongly advised to protect your iPhone X from watery conditions. Be careful when using iPhone around swimming pools, beaches, toilets, and in rainy weather.

Avoid damage when your phone gets wet

Things that you keep a note of after your iPhone gets wet, either from rain, or spilled beverage, or a toilet submersion:

•       Don't plug anything into it until you're certain it's dry again. Connecting a charger or headphones via a wet port may cause serious damage to your iPhone.

•       Wipe your iPhone off with a soft cotton cloth.

•       To dry your iPhone from the inside tap it gently against your hand with the screen facing down to remove excess liquid.

•       Leave your iPhone X in a dry place with some airflow.

•       Placing your iPhone in front of a fan blowing cool air directly into the Lightning connector can also help the drying process.

•       Don't dry your iPhone X with an external heat source.

•       Don’t insert any object like a cotton swab or a towel, into the Lightning connector.

The bottom line is the iPhone X waterproof is a myth. It is water-resistant to an extent. But you should follow the guidelines when using an iPhone.
