Is There Any Organic Solution to Remove Ink From Carpet?

by Austin Baines Content Writer

Carpets are the main attention seekers within any four walls. A magnificently designed, intricately stitched and colour coordinated with the walls, carpets have a striking presence amongst the other objects either be it in a residential or commercial space.  A smooth textured aesthetic carpet laid in the floor of a house coupled with a comfortable ambience is all what one would need when one gets back home after a tiring day at work. To the extent that one rather prefers to fall asleep over the carpet without the fear of being pricked or getting the clothes dirty.

But just like clear and beautiful faces end up with pimples, there are times when these ‘essentials’ like carpets end up having dirt patches somewhere or the other. It could be of a cola or alcohol that was spilt while partying the night or a colour paint dropped on the floor while you were busy getting your artistic skills right, or simply some drops of ink that dripped off your pen while you were deeply jotting down some random thoughts on a piece of paper.

While it is definitely difficult to remove the muddy and dirty patches of your shoes or that of the food and beverages, it is also problematic to remove the stains that result from spilled ink from your pen. In addition to that, ink is literally made up of dyes that are mainly intended to stain something. Ink can be in any form, i.e., liquid, paste, or oil based. Apart from dyes, ink also contains solvents, fluorescent, lubricants, surfactants etc which makes it all the more complicated when you want the patches eradicated. There are also different types of inks based on its varied purposes. It can be water-based ink, permanent ink or ballpoint ink. It is also pretty much expensive to get the cleaning done by way of laundry services if the ink patch has not spread enough to be a worrying picture.

Different types of ink require different approaches to remove the stains. Hence it becomes all the more necessary to ensure the kind of carpet surface that one is going to work with.

In case of stains from a ballpoint ink, you will need to have a few bottles of lacquer hairspray, depending on the size, spread, and the quickness with which you would want the stain removed. Do spray the bottle onto the stained areas and use a clean white cloth to blot over the affected regions where the lacquer is sprayed. Keep blotting over it till the stain disappears and once done, allow it to dry. Later on, do hand brush the region and run a round of vacuum over the same.

When the stains are those of permanent ink, i.e., of gel-pens or markers, dab with a white cloth over the stain using a rubbing alcohol till it is moistened. It is necessary to keep dabbing over the stain till the ink is transferred to the towel. Once clean, again use a white cloth to dab over the same area with lukewarm water. If the rubbing alcohol does not work (which should not really be the case), repeat the same process with a lacquer hair spray.

In the case of a water-based ink stain, i.e., inks that are basically of washable markers or water colours, you will need to use a mix of dish washing liquid with lukewarm water. Just like in the above instances, use a dry white cloth to dab into the mixed liquid and blot the same over the stained areas of the carpet and continue blotting till the ink disappears.

In all the above occasions, the user will have to ensure that he/she dabs/blots the white cloth over the stained areas and not rub over it. Rubbing over the ink would essentially spread the stains over the yet unaffected areas as well.

Apart from these solutions, one simple organic way to remove these stains would be by using white vinegar with a pinch of salt mixed to it. Repeat the process by dabbing a white cloth into the mixture and then blotting the cloth over stained and affected areas and tap till the ink disappears. Allow the carpet to dry and run a vacuum over it. Voila, it's all the same even before you know it!
