Is Mt. Kilimanjaro Trek A Challenge Or Piece Of Cake?
Why
go on Mt. Kilimanjaro Trek? Are you insane? Everybody knows that Mount
Kilimanjaro is the highest mountain in Africa that is approximately 4,900 m from
its base to 5,895 m above sea level and is a major climbing destination. Yes,
you are right. But it is also the high altitude trek that you can simply walk
up with no need of ropes, special climbing equipment, and previous experience. But
even if no technical skill is required and it is nothing more than an uphill
walk, trekking on Mt. Kilimanjaro can a demanding adventure. The main reason
for it is the altitude and the fact that it takes many days to get to the top
and the low oxygen levels at height. But it rewards you with sights that will
capture your mind and make profound impressions. The first reward is experience
five contrasting eco-systems along the way. Then there are visions of zebras,
giraffes and elephants prancing free in the wild and exotic birds up in the sky.
Not to forget the best preserved crater in the peak of Kilimanjaro or the stars
in the sky from the top etc.

go on this trek and show the world not to underestimate the power of adventure
seekers. Now that we have decided to go for Mt. Kilimanjaro Trek, let’s
find out the when, what and how to do this successfully. As we have already
discussed that Kilimanjaro can be a very demanding adventure. Not everyone make
it top. People give up mid way due to many problems caused by AMS (Acute
Mountain Sickness). What you need to do is ascertain a route that will help you
adapt to its altitude. Longer routes are our preferred option for trekkers. Do
not overdo and please ‘Kwenda PolePole’ which means Go-Slow, Slow in Swahili.
And don’t forget the most important health rule ‘Drink Lots of Fluids’. While
on the move, it is the easiest rule to ignore. But don’t.
Well, we are almost ready for Mt. Kilimanjaro Trek. So, we
can see which routes are most preferred and what we get out of it. The Lemosho
Crater and Summit Route comes with the possible of visions wildlife along the
forest section and Lemosho Western Breach Crater is an ascent to the Western
Breach to the crater via the classic route. Both routes are for trekkers who
want a quiet route away from the crowds for the first two days trekking in a 12
day hike. The Machame and TheGrand Traverse are 10-day routes that offer
trekkers a longer route with optimum acclimatisation and captivating views on
Africa’s highest mountain. The Rongai (Loitokitok Route) is the only route to
approach Kibo from the north and the least travelled whereas Umbwe is the hardest
trekking route due to its steep ascent and without the clutter and chatter of
other trekkers. Thus both the routes are least time taking but challenging
routes.
