Irregular Menses : Causes, Symptoms and Treatment

and bleeding from vagina takes place. Usually, menstrual cycle ranges
from 21 to 35 days and among most women, menstrual period lasts from 4
to 7 days. Following are the examples and symptoms of irregular menses:
Periods that take place in less than 21 days or more than 35 days
Missing three or more periods on the trot
Relatively heavier or lighter menstrual flow than the normal
Periods lasting for more than seven days
Aching, cramping, feeling of nausea and vomiting during periods
Causes of Irregular Periods
- Stress
- Bad Eating Habits
- Usage of Birth control pills
- Fibroids
- Endometriosis
- Pelvic Inflammatory Disease
- Poor Lifestyle – Smoking, excessive drinking, usage of drugs, etc.
- Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS)
- Hormonal Imbalance
- Medication
Pregnancy in Irregular Menses
One thing that all women must remember is that without periods, there cannot be pregnancy. Irregular or abnormal menses account about 40% cases of infertility. Women usually cease to ovulate in case of abnormal menses and no periods.
Treatment for Irregular Menses
Following are some of the treatments to cure irregular menses:
- Remove Stress: Removing of stress will help to regulate the hormones which will lead to regulate the menstrual cycle.
- Treating current disease or conditions: Treating the current disease might be helpful if these irregular menses are caused by it.
- Hormonal Therapy: Menstrual cycle can be regulated through hormones such as estrogen which are instrumental in stemming excessive bleeding.
- Lifestyle changes: One must adopt healthy lifestyle
and eschew smoking, excessive drinking and usage of drugs. Eating
healthy food and moderate exercise are also beneficial.
- Surgery: Sometimes, abnormal periods are caused by
structural problems in uterus or because of blockage of fallopian tubes.
They can be cured through specific surgeries. Uterine Fibroids are one
of the causes of abnormal menses so it is important to get them removed
through surgery (or other available methods) to overcome irregular
menses.
