The Journalistic, Investigative is a mainspring of Vollmanns enormous
productivity. But still "Whores for Gloria" is not a historical novel,
not a case of documentary social realism. Man has put the novel in the
near Charles Bukowski, but has him thus become not necessarily meet. The
end then nevertheless heartwarming community of Crashed, act of the
Bukowskis stories, has no equivalent in Vollmann. Heat one seeks in
"Whores for Gloria" in vain, but what you find is love - and perhaps
quite in the sense of Ignatius of Loyola, as a "mutual exchange of both
sides." Jimmy is the sad and at the same time for ecstatic love capable
hero of Vollmanns novel.
Jimmy has been in Vietnam and has missed the connection to civilian life after his return. Now he roams through the Tenderloin District, drinks beer, meets whores and dreaming the whole time just by Gloria. Gloria, this is the sum and the apotheosis of all whores, whom Jimmy met on his trips, the woman there is perhaps only in his dreams, the woman in any case, the need to resemble all other whores to like Jimmy - and because the everything takes place in San Francisco, one is reminded of Hitchcock's "Vertigo" and James Stewart's attempts to transform Kim Novak into the woman of his dreams back. "You have to put this wig," Jimmy said to Cynthia, and the hair around your face flowing like rays of sunshine and thou shalt call me your husband here. "
But Cynthia feels about this service will not be able, and at the end is the wig, which she had in Gloria to transform, in a gully. Vollmann leaves unclear whether Gloria once Jimmy's wife was or what else the two in reality each connected. Also, the "end of history", as the title of the final chapter, does not answer this question. Many years ago, there remembers "Code Six", who was with Jimmy in Vietnam and is now stranded themselves in the red light district, Jimmy had been shot in front of a Chinese restaurant - Gloria, a prostitute. Vollmann does nothing to end the twilight of exchange ratios against substantial facts. Gloria, the woman of his dreams, his mistress, his murderer, his childhood friend, or whatever else it may be, remains a phantom.
