Interactive Football Exhibition Highlights Popular Sport’s Heritage

by jeasson jea businessman

The Devon Guild of Craftsmen has come up with an innovative project, which, in an exhibition format, is due to start a tour of UK football grounds in 2015. The idea behind the project is to highlight the links between crafts, local industry and English football clubs. This is an excellent exhibition and one that many top school travel companies may consider including in their portfolios.

Many young people may be completely unaware that the history of football clubs, their identity and nicknames are often intricately linked to local traditions, industry and craft skills. This project aims to highlight these cultural connections and, working with local museums and companies it offers links to the materials, local skills and club locations throughout England. Young students will be amazed at what they can uncover about the nation’s favourite sport when they embark on this project. Apart from being informative, it is also an interactive and very stimulating learning tool for students.

There are several clubs involved so far; these include Stoke City, known colloquially as The Potters, Sheffield United, known as The Blades, and Macclesfield Town, referred to as The Silkmen. The project is looking to recruit more clubs that may be interested in joining. School travel companies will be able to take advantage of the fact that the project consists of two touring exhibitions taking place over three years. The two exhibitions are to be called Home Ground and Souvenirs from Home.

The Devon Guild is an acclaimed contemporary art exhibition space in Devon and is very charity orientated as well as being proactive in involving young people in local craft education. The Guild’s “Big Hand, Little Hand” organisation is involved in working with school travel companies to organise craft workshops in school and colleges. They offer help to teachers and trip organisers in planning projects with professional craft workers who will then visit the school and run relevant workshops. These all tie in to meet national curriculum
