Insulate you Home Walls Properly and Save Energy

by Ismael B. Insulation Contractor

Wall insulation acts as a barrier and restricts heat loss and heat gain which in turn keeps home cooler during summers and warmer during winters. A properly insulated wall makes your home energy efficient and provides improved comfort. Hence proper insulation of walls is necessary.

The major drawback of a house without proper wall insulation is air leakage. Because of the air leakage home gets excessively cold during winters. Similarly, heats up the home that is unbearable during summers. Hence irrespective of the size of your home it is important to insulate its walls properly to make it energy efficient. Insulating the walls of your home is equivalent to wrapping it in a warm thermal blanket. There are many benefits of a properly insulated wall as well such as reduced HVAC bills, improved comfort of homes and a lot more.

Wall insulation is broadly divided into three types; these are cavity wall insulation, internal wall insulation and external wall insulation.

Cavity Wall Insulation

Cavity wall insulation is one of the most cost effective methods of insulating a home. In this method insulation is pumped into the existing cavity in the wall and hence is easy to install. As we all know wearing several layers of clothing keeps our bodies warm because the layers trap the air in between them and keep it still. The work mechanism of cavity wall insulation is the same as a wool-like material is used to insulate your home that traps the air between its fibers to create an air matrix and hence retains heat effectively.

Internal Wall Insulation

Internal wall insulation as the name suggests is applied to the internal walls of a building. Typically, it consists of dry lining in the form of pre-insulated plasterboard or built up system using studwork frames and fibrous insulation such as mineral wool. In one case, thermal studwork and glass mineral wool insulation is used to build up internal wall insulation which is once fitted; the walls are finished with plasterboard making it look fresh and clean surface. In this case encroachment of internal space is minimal. The other case is where specially manufactured plasterboard with insulation qualities is being used. The thickness of the insulated plasterboard determines the performance. The plasterboard is either fixed with a screw or wet fixed to the existing walls. It is comparatively an easier, cheaper and effective method than the external wall insulation.

External Wall Insulation

Also known as Solid Wall Insulation, external wall insulation is used to insulate houses that do not have cavity walls. As the name suggests this method is applied on the external walls of a building. How it works is the same way as a cavity wall insulation method works. It creates a barrier that stops heat escaping through the walls. In the external wall insulation method, a rigid insulation material is being used i.e. the expanded polystyrene slabs. These expanded polystyrene slabs consist of thousands of trapped air pockets that make it an excellent insulator. These are also easy to cut into required shapes and hence can be fit neatly around the windows, door frames and other architectural features. To fix these slabs anchors are being used that are drilled into the walls and then covered with a layer of reinforcing mortar. And all this is covered up with a glass fiber mesh which provides structural strength to the insulation system.
