Desk power grommets are extremely useful products that are fitted in the cavity on wooden desks meant for passing electrical wires of a desktop computer and other items placed at the table. Installing them is not difficult at all. With the help of a little bit of planning and utilising the right tools, the task can be completed in a snap.

Here are the steps that you will have to follow for installing a desk power grommet  :

Choose the Right One For Your Desk
Grommets meant to fit in wooden desks are usually made of plastic or rubber, materials that can protect the wires passing through them against sharp corners of the hole. Consider your requirements when selecting a grommet, whether you want it to impart a finished look or just want to provide a protection to the wires.

Take Measurements
Measure the items that would be passing through the grommet, such as dimensions of the object and diameter of the wires. If you are placing a connector or fitting through it, take it into account as well. As for the hole in the desk, you can either buy a grommet according to the diameter of the hole or drill a cavity after purchasing one. Smooth the sharp edges of the cavity as much as you can.

Place the Grommet Edging
Generally, a small covering made of plastic must be used to provide a finishing to the edge. You must select the accurate thickness for the edging and then push it on the edge that you want to protect. You may require to pull on the sides with your fingers to open them a bit. A small amount of adhesive can be used to ensure that the edging stays in its place.

Install the Grommet
If you notice that the fit is a bit tight, you can apply silicone around the edges of the grommet right before placing it in the hole. The silicone will also help to hold it in its place after it dries up. Petroleum jelly or plain grease may be used as well, but they would not dry up.

Insert the Wires
Speaking about this, you can either feed in the wires after fitting the grommet within the cavity or you may place them in the hole before the installation. But pre-feeding the wires in the cavity should only be considered if you are expecting to have problems placing them in after the installation.
