Information on The Different Types of Drywipe Boards Available

by Jill Smith Shopping

Whiteboards (also known as wipe boards, dry-wipe boards or dry-erase boards) is the name given to any glossy, usually white surface board used with a non-permanent marker pens. The whiteboard evolved as a clean, dust free version of the traditional chalkboard back in the 1960s but it took some time before they really became accepted – their widespread adoption not really happening until the 1990s.

They come in a range of specifications to suit budget and functionality, and all have the ability to allow rapid marking and erasing of messages on their surface. Cheap white boards are manufactured in a similar way to a kitchen worktop – with a thin white laminate skin (similar to Formica) bonded to a particle or chip board base for rigidity. The boards are then framed in varying styles and methods to protect the edge and provide a pleasing appearance. The frames are often the means to provide wall fixings, with screw holes hidden behind push-fit removable plastic corner mouldings.

These are termed laminate white boards and do nothing but offer a dry-wipe writing surface. For a bit more money, but still at the cheaper end of the market, the laminate board is available with a white faced steel surface which offers secondary use as a Dry Wipe Whiteboards and is very popular, particularly in offices. These are generally referred to simply as magnetic white boards, and mustn’t be confused with the much more expensive vitreous enamel steel (VES) whiteboards that we offer with a life-time guarantee (which are also magnetic). It is the completely non-porous quality of the VES surface that means ink will never penetrate it however long the ink is left on, unlike other cheaper surfaces which can leave residue of erased markings after a period of time and then require cleaning intermittently with a proprietary board cleaner.

Due to the significant price difference, cheaper laminate white boards - whether magnetic or not – have the lion’s share of the market, particularly in the office supplies sector. But in more demanding environments, such as school classrooms, VES boards tend to remain the board of choice.

So, where can you use whiteboards? The answer is almost anywhere! Office presentations, training rooms, school classrooms, university lecture theatres and in the home are just a few examples. Most whiteboards are single sided for wall mounting or in free-standing easel type stands, but double-sided boards in revolving stands are also available and are very popular for office presentation and educational use.

At Genite, we stock a wide selection of wipe boards here in the UK, available in a variety of sizes and styles. If you’re after something bespoke, some of our whiteboards can be manufactured to special sizes and colours or printed with your branding. White boards are one of our best selling products because they are so versatile.
