Infertility Treatment During Pandemic

by Shivani Sachdev Founder & Director

The Corona Virus Pandemic has created various challenges for the health care system. This pandemic situation may remain a part of our lives for a very long time and it is a harsh reality that we must work in these situations until all get vaccinated. It started a new debate about the alternative methods of infertility treatments. The major challenge is to create a balance between the responsibility of social distancing and providing assistance to infertile couples to become parents.

1.     Modification in Patient Assessment

There are some guidelines for patient assessment during coronavirus pandemic. If a patient is RTPCR negative, he/she can go ahead with the treatment. The covid test must be done three days before every single visit to the clinic. Also, patients going through the treatment are suggested to keep themselves isolated to avoid any infection. Dr. Shivani Sachdev Gour - the best female fertility doctor in Delhi explains the following additional steps taken for patient assessment.

·         Patients with comorbidities: The impact of coronavirus is more severe for patients with comorbidities such as diabetes, blood pressure, chronic diseases, and so on. If possible, they are advised to avoid treatment during this situation. But if they can’t delay the treatment, they must consult their doctors.

·         Patients Recovered with Covid-19: Patients, who have beaten the coronavirus infection recently, are advised to bring their clearance certificate along with the RTCPCR negative report.

·         Patients infected from Covid-19 during the Treatment: If any patient is infected by the virus in the middle of the IVF treatment cycle, the doctor recommends postponing the treatment. The treatment resumes when the patient tests negative. If the patient is infected after the egg retrieval, it is advisable to cryopreserve the egg/embryo and delay the transfer until the patient recovered from the infection.

2.     Modification in Service Layout of Clinic

Fertility clinics should avoid the crowd at a time in the clinic. Clinics must provide the facility to book appointments online. Clinics must evaluate their resources, staff, machinery, and area before resuming the work. Unlike in the normal situation, the clinic staff must provide the online consultation so as limit the volume of people at a time. SCI IVF Hospital - the best IVF clinic in Delhi NCR is following all measures to avoid the spread of the virus.

·         Regular sanitization of the hospital according to the protocols.

·         Pandemic related training and standard procedure to staff.

·         Installation of protective screens and providing PPE kit to the entire staff.

·         Management of appointment with schedule a timetable if a physical check-up is required.

·         If face to face check-up is not necessary, consolation or counseling can be done through electronic communications.

·         Limitation on the number of companions in case of physical appointments.

3.     Criteria For Donors

The presence of the Covid-19 virus in the semen is reported in some cases. If the donor of oocyte or sperm is found covid infected during the treatment, the cancellation of the process is considered. Egg or sperm donors must go through the RTPCR test before the IVF process starts. Donors are advised to stay in quarantine until the process completes to avoid any risk of infection.
