The market for data centre in India has witnessed a tremendous growth hand increase amount of investments in order to feed the country’s growing appetite for such services. But what exactly is a data centre? Globally more than 2 quintillions of data are produced every single day through mails, tweets, posts, videos, etc. These have to be stored somewhere, and so the data centres come in to the limelight.
WHAT IS A DATA CENTRE?

Data centres are facilities that businesses and organizations can utilize to store and manage large amounts of data. Data being extremely crucial in any organizations operations, the importance of data centers for businesses are becoming more and more significant.

Data centres are a conglomerate of various elements. These centres are composed of networked computers, hardware equipment and a plethora of other elements. Some of the advantages data centres offer is the facilities of uninterrupted power supply, cooling systems, adequate network carrier connectivity and adequate space for office space management benefits.

Customers can choose the size of storage to suit their requirement, from rooms to cabinets and racks. The organizations have the flexibility to organize and process their data the way they want.

THE PRESENT

Currently India’s data centre market is valued at $2.2 billion, and is expected to reach US$4.5 billion by 2018. Main drivers for this huge increase are growth in data and digital intelligent devices, digitalization and also the government’s Digital India campaign.

There are huge facilities for cloud hosting in Chennai, Mumbai, Delhi, Bangalore and Hyderabad. With data giants like Amazon, Microsoft, Google, IBM, Alibaba and the others making footprints in the country the market anticipates much more growth and expansion.

There are two models of data centres: Captive data centre and External data centre.

In the case of a captive data centre the organization builds, operates and manages its own data centre. This is done for internal purposes.

In the case of an external data centre the operation is outsourced. In this model, the organization lease space and hosting services.

Today, many businesses and organizations are adopting an outsourced model of data centres. Some of the main reasons for this shift is because of the zero capital investment and high efficiency that such services offer.

Out of all the outsourced models, colocation seems to dominate the market. There are many reasons for this. The high level security that colocation offers is far superior than most of the in-house facilities. Also, building and maintaining a data centre is a very tedious process that requires a lot capital investment.

India as a growing economy outsources most of its data centre needs as it is more cost efficient and practical for most of the businesses. Even though the competition in the data centre market is furious in India there is lot of scope in this sector.
