Indian Women seeking to strike a balance between tradition and modernity with western clothes

by Fashion Affair Owner

Media has been a great leveler in India, be it the television channels, the movies, newspapers & magazines or the Internet.  The influence of media on the Indian psyche shows greater visibility when one notices the change in the food pattern, clothes and social norms prevalent in the society. Interestingly this influence can be seen through the length and breadth of the entire nation and across all sections of the society.  One such influence is the wide acceptability of western clothes especially in regards to the fairer sex.  A trend which was only visible in the metros and bigger cities of the country is now a norm in Tier II and Tier III cities of India.

The Indian masses have truly seen to have embraced the true concept of modernity and one of its form being the western clothes for women.  Not only does it some way represents the liberation of the Indian women but it also needs to be seen as an effort towards being a truly global citizen. It necessarily does not imply that the traditional Indian dresses are being discarded as old fashioned and cumbersome to wear. Our own traditional dresses still flaunt the marriages and other festive and religious occasions. But when it comes to choosing a dress for work, party and normal day-to-day wear, it seems the western clothes are the preferred due to ease in wearing and comfort. Not to omit the fact that these clothes provide the branding of being confident, modern and educated.  To see the positive in this whole scenario is Indian women is not infatuated with the trend but seems to have learned to strike the right balance between traditional and modern dresses.  India’s emerging fashion and design culture has equally well supported this trend since at least the last decade.

This acceptability of western clothes has been fueled no doubt by its easy availability.  Be it the normal shops in the cities, or the malls that have become so common in India and these are the places where western clothes of all brands and styles are easily available. Further, the popularity and prominence shopping online for clothes have erased all boundaries and provided seamless choice irrespective of the geographical location of the customer.  The convenience involved in online shopping is also one of the major attractions. Even the major international brands are also easily available.

The women of India are not only confident but have become independent as well as are reflected in her choice of clothes that she wears for different occasions.
