The Indian woman has now come of age regarding fashion and style, and this phenomenon is not only witnessed in bigger cities, but the smaller ones are also now seeing this transformation.  The traditional Indian outfits are still popular however the growth rate on an annual basis is only 8 to 10 %. It is the western outfits for ladies which steal the limelight with an impressive growth rate of nearly 18%.  This statistic signals a strong trend in which there is a dramatic shift witnessed in the Indian women’s wear market which has a size of about 16 billion dollars.

Western outfits for ladies offer a lot more than style; it is more about comfort, utility, ease and above all a whole new fashion leading to the westernization of the wardrobes in each and every household in this country.  This trend has not only picked up by ladies less than twenty-five years of age category, but the older age group has also found relevance in this style of dressing up.  Every Indian woman wants to look younger and stylish it seems.  Visit any retail outlet and discover that out of their total stock nearly 5o % to 60% of the stock consists of western styled clothes.  Whether the Indian women wear such clothes daily or just a few times in a week but these outfits have made a strong presence in the minds of the women folks.

So what is it which compels to go for western outfits for ladies in India? The socio-economic factors are one of the main reasons, it looks. The vast population of this country, the growing middle class, the wave of globalization and the increased exposure of the western trends in fashion through various television channels and not to miss the massive influence exerted by the Internet.  Furthermore, last decade or so saw the Indian women gaining economic independence and last but not the least the retail revolution which swept the length and breadth of this nation making dresses of all kind readily available and affordable too.

The popularity of western outfits for ladies in India is a strong indication of empowerment of the fairer sex. These clothes which were once assumed to be the privilege of the upper-class Indians, have now gained acceptance in all spheres of the population equally well.

For ages, these dresses were associated with a lifestyle and a particular mindset too. The majority of the Indian women now wish to be associated with it.
