Independence Day

by Bakyasara Sara bakyasra

The Awakened Source Review Every 4th of July, like everyone else, I look forward to spending time with friends and family, playing with fireworks, and ending the day with the amazing fireworks displays that are intended to remind us of the battle torn sky during the birth of our nation. But every year I also do a little reflection on what it was like for the colonists and patriots that really went through this fearful and tumultuous time. I am admirer of great courage, perhaps because I wonder if I would have had it in me to have held up to the level of courage our patriot fathers and mothers did. In fairness to myself in questioning my own courage, there is little call these days for great feats of courage such as those demonstrated by our founding fathers and their compatriots. Most generally, because of their sacrifices, we live in relative safety and predictability. So, when I hear stories of tremendous courage I am particularly moved.

Every once in awhile, you hear about these random stories of bravery, and when I do, I can't help but ask myself - "Would I, or could I have done that?" I'd like to think yes, but honestly I don't know. Invariably, my thoughts also turn to our military men and women and the courage and bravery they demonstrate every day while on duty. Some of these military are just kids, afraid and confused, but still putting themselves in harms way for a greater purpose. We also hear many heroic stories about our policemen, fireman or other emergency personal. Every call they are summoned to is a high risk situation that may require incredible sacrifice. I mean seriously, can you imagine having to deal with that every time you go to work? It would be a little like carrying a loaded gun in your pocket all the time.
