Improvements in macOS That Boost Productivity

by Emma Justin SEO Excutive

Adapting from an older device to a new one takes time. You go through its system, its functions, and then start to learn its handling. On the other hand, it takes no time to shift certain settings to make your device a better version of itself. There are certain improvements or changes you can make in your macOS to boost your productivity.

Below are the tricks you can follow to change the settings of your macOS that’ll make your job easier.

Increasing Cursor Size

The idea might sound unimportant, but changing the size of your cursor can make a huge difference. Especially when the auto-hiding function of macOS disappears from the cursor while typing. The steps to change the size of the cursor are:

  • Go to the ‘System Preferences’ window.
  • Select the ‘Accessibility’ tab.
  • Hit the ‘Display’ option from the left toolbar.
  • Now, move the pointer to the right to increase the cursor size.

Avoid Arranging the Dock Horizontally

The dock is present at the bottom of the screen in macOS. If you would have noticed, it takes a lot of space than arranging it vertically on the screen, i.e. to the left or tight. You can also manage to adjust the size of the dock under the ‘Dock’ tab in ‘System Preferences.’ Therefore, you can change the dock settings and arrange it in a vertical order on either- edges of the screen to avoid the extra space taken by the horizontal arrangement.

Pin or Attach Only Useful Icons to the Dock

macOS places some of the most useful icons on the dock by default. Thus, you can take down some of the icons if you think they’re not very important. To unpin an icon from the dock, press the icon and drag it to the screen and release it.

On the other hand, you can permanently pin important apps on the dock, to do the same, right-click on the icon, and check options. Next, select ‘Keep in Dock.’

Keep Apps on Specific Desktops to Organize Windows

If you have a lot of applications or software or other icons piled up, it always gets hard to quickly find what you want to access. Thus, you can use the ‘Spaces’ feature of macOS to use multiple desktops for arranging apps and Windows.

To access the multiple desktops, swipe from bottom to up using three fingers or hit the F3 key on your trackpad. A list of desktops will appear on the top of the screen. Press the ‘+’ button to add more screen or press ‘x’ to close a specific one.

You can also change places of the apps across these screens by dragging icons. For instance, you want to keep the important apps on the first desktop, and unimportant ones on the rest of the screens. To restrict any app from moving to another desktop, right-click on the app’s icon present on the dock. Next, click on the ‘Options’ to open a pop-up menu and select ‘This Desktop.’

Once you get used to the placement of the apps, it’ll be easy to locate and access them instantly without struggling and finding them.

Group Windows as Tabs

macOS applications enable you to group windows as tabs to keep the apps of the same nature together, if you wish, without cluttering the screen. One thing to be noted here is that not all the apps support this feature. Thus, to check the same, click on the ‘View’ tab on the top of the screen, and select ‘Show.’ A list of apps will appear on the next window and the ones with the ‘+’ sign support the feature.

You can group a number of windows by clicking on the ‘Window’ tab on the top of the screen, and selecting the ‘Merge all Windows’ option. Apart from Safari, this feature also comes handy with Apple Maps, Mail, etc. An additional advantage of using this feature is that you can set these settings to default, which means the new windows will open as tabs automatically. The steps to do the same are:

  • Go to the ‘System Preferences’ window.
  • Click on the ‘Dock’ tab.
  • Select ‘Always’ rather than ‘Prefer Tabs When Opening Documents.’

Unlock Your Mac with the Apple Watch

You can use your Apple Watch to unlock the Mac automatically. All you need to have is an Apple Watch with watchOS 3 version and a Mac. The steps to set up these settings are:

  • Go to the ‘System Preferences’ window.
  • Click on the ‘Security and Privacy’ tab.
  • Allow the ‘Use Your Apple Watch to Unlock Apps and Your Mac’ option.

Note: Mac automatically unlocks itself whenever the Apple Watch is placed nearby without entering the password.

Use Safari Reader View

Safari Reader View is an intelligent feature that helps you keep your focus on the content you’re searching for without leading to any distractions. You can choose to enable the Safari Reader View for certain websites, and the steps to do the same are:

  • Go to the website and open the content you want to read.
  • Tap the Reader icon on the address bar.
  • To set the option to automatic for that specific website, press and hold the ‘Reader View’ option. Next, select ‘Use Reader Automatically.’

Following these seven improvement methods on your macOS can boost the productivity of your device. Also, it improves your experience of working and managing the apps.
