Importance of Having a Music Mentor

by Ajay Sharma consultant
Education is a two-way process. No matter how good a student may be, nothing extraordinary can ever be achieved if the teacher is unable to bring out the best from him/her. And for creative courses like music, dance, art, photography etc., it is even more essential for you to find a mentor who apart from having an expertise in his field, would train and lead you in the right manner. Considering the amount of time you wouldbe spending with that one person in honing your skills, it is only natural that you would be greatly influenced by that personality. My sister, who learnt photography from Delhi College of photography, would surely testify to the point I am trying to make here. She is what she is today only because of the great teachers she studied under.

It doesn’t matter whether you take personal sessions in music from an accomplished personality, or join a famous music institute along with other students. But who you learn from is something that really matters. A music mentor is more than a music teacher. Identifying your strengths and weaknesses, helping you overcome your weaknesses, filling you with self-belief, inspiring you to work harder, reprimanding you when you go wrong etc. are some of the things a music mentor would willingly do to see you walk the path of success with humility.

But how should you start? In this day and age when information is just a click away, you need not go too far. Firstly, compile a comprehensive list of available music courses you are interested in. Secondly, read about the schools that offer the choice of your course. Learn from others by reading their reviews and opinions and it would not be difficult for you to shortlist your favourite ones. And then go have a personal interaction with the teachers there and see if you like them. Or you could also select a person you already know. But apart from talent and knowledge, here are some characteristics a good music mentor should be endowed with:

1.Character
You would not want to be mentored by a person who looks down upon people. Such people can never be good teachers. Find someone who is learned and at the same time, wishes to impart hope and courage through his/her art.

2. Someone who cares
Find someone who truly wants his pupils to surpass his own self; someone who continuously raises the bar and never lets you dwell in your comfort zone.

3. Inspiring personality
While it is imperative for teachers to be tough at times, it is equally important for them to be able to keep you inspired at all times.
