Immigrant Visas for Australia

by Immigration Agent Immigrant Visas for Australia
Australia has long been an extremely attractive destination for people from all around the world.

The culture, weather, lifestyle and economy, have all made this young country a prime target for many people looking to start a new life or those trying to gain some experience of living and working overseas.  However Australia, like most countries around the world, maintains controls over who can live there, for how long and engaged in what activities - unless they are Australian citizens.

If Australia is one of your ambitions, how do you go about getting the right to live and work there? Note that what follows doesn’t apply to citizens of New Zealand, where special arrangements typically apply.

The Basics

You cannot just fly to Australia and say upon arrival that you want live in the country. You must have a visa, which will entitle you to stay there for a specified period of time and allow you to engage in either leisure (tourism) or professional activities.

You should be aware at the very outset that Australia has an international reputation for taking a hard line with people who have entered the country illegally or who are trying to stay there outside the duration and terms of their appropriate visa.  Don’t try to do so!

Instead, make sure at all times that you have an appropriate visa and are operating within its parameters.

The Visas

The type of visa you will require and indeed be eligible for, will vary considerably depending upon why it is you wish to enter Australia, how long you wish to stay and what you plan to do once you are there.

Space here does not permit a full discussion of every single type of Australian immigration visa and sub-visa.  What you will find though is that they will include types such as:

•    The right to live in the country and work there for a specified period of time.

•    If you are looking to marry an Australian citizen.

•    Situations where you are joining a spouse who already has a legitimate visa allowing him or her to live and work in Australia
•     Permission to enter the country for the purposes of education and recreational travel.  That may or may not include the right to engage in some types of paid work while you are there.

•    If you are planning to set up a business in the country and invest money.

•    Etc.

How to Apply

In theory, you can apply for any type of Australian immigration visa yourself.  Information is available online as are application forms.

It’s worth noting though that the application processes for Australian immigration visas are complicated and they can (and do) lead to confusion amongst applicants.

If you apply for the wrong type of visa or simply make errors in the way you go about things, the very best that is likely to happen will be extended delays in getting a decision and at worst your application could be rejected.

That’s why many people apply for their visas through Australian immigration agents who are experts in all of the procedures, paperwork and above all the many different categories of visa that can be applied for.

There really is little point in applying for a visatype that you have absolutely no prospect of obtaining because it doesn’t apply in your particular circumstances.  So, make sure you get it right first time and secure that permission to live and work in Australia even if it means paying a relatively modest fee to an Australian immigration consultant.
