Ideal Chalking Techniques Extending Life of Snooker Billiard Chalks

One of the most essential accessories of Snooker game is the chalk. But most of the times it is seen that many people do not realize how important it is to chalk the snooker cue in an appropriate way! With an ideal chalking technique, not only the life of the chalk extends but also the cue tip and ferrule remain healthy which further helps in minimizing the miscues. Besides these it also makes you look like you are a pro and you know what you are doing! Maximizing the life of snooker billiard chalks along with keeping your cue stick in good shape is not that difficult but it requires few sensible efforts.

  • Chalking the cue before every single shot – It is always considered better to chalk the cue before every single shot. But there are few newer chalks available today that allows you to chalk just once or twice a game due to the compound and make-up of the chalk.
  • Tilt your cue while chalking – To get the most thorough and suitable chalk coverage on your snooker cue tip you need to tilt your cue at an angle and use a careful coating motion. And then turn the cue stick slowly keeping the chalking coverage steady.
  • Do not drill the chalk! – When you drill the cue tip into the chalk it only covers the center of the tip and making a hole in the chalk! To have a better snooker game experience you need to ensure that the chalk covers the entire surface area of the tip. As Minnesota Fats once said – “Chalk your tip like a lady puts on lipstick”, you must apply chalk to the cue tip just like lipstick is applied i.e. lightly but completely.
  • Chalk your Cue but not over the table! –If you chalk your cue over the table the chalk dust and the chips on the cloth can dirty up the cloth as well as the balls which then react in an unpredictable manner while playing.
  • Don’t bang the cue for removing excess chalk dust – In the attempt of clearing out the excess chalk dust from the cue never bang the cue against the side of the table or anywhere else. Also, do not blow on your tip as the moisture from your breath can moisturize the chalk which then does not work effectively.
  • Sharing the Chalk? Return the chalk after use – If you are sharing the chalk with the table then, after using it return the chalk to the person who has the next turn! When you are not shooting or you are not on the table you should not keep it with you!
  • Keep the chalk down with color facing up – Always make sure you set the chalk down with the color of the chalk facing up. By doing so, the table and the clothes remain clean which in turn keeps your hands clean keeping balls and equipment cleaner as well!
  • Do not ever whack the cube of chalk – To extend your chalk’s life never smack the chalk cube on the side of the table or bang it down the table. Also use your own belt clip, if you want a steady piece of chalk that is all yours.
  • Choose a color of the chalk wisely – Always try to use a color of chalk that goes with the color of the cloth on the snooker table to make the chalk marks on the table less noticeable.

Also, you must store snooker billiard chalks in a cool and dry place as overexposure to moisture can cause “dead chalk” that will ultimately result in miscuing.
