The post of a Probationary Officer (PO) in a bank is one of the most sought after job profiles in the banking industry. A bank PO is basically a management trainee who is exposed to numerous tasks from investment, marketing, accounting & budgeting to billing etc., during the tenure of his/her probation period. 

The Institute of Banking Personnel Selection (IBPS), an autonomous body that has been registered under the Societies Registration Act of 1860 and a Public Trust under the Bombay Public Trust Act of 1950, conducts the entry level examination for the post of Probationary Officer (PO) for all the public sector banks in India and the various Regional Rural banks. As per the new and static format of the bank PO examinations, the Institute will conduct a Common Written Examination (CWE) for the selection of Probationary Officer/Management Trainee personnel in Public Sector Banks. This system of a Common Written Examination (CWE) has been approved by the Managing Committee of the Indian Banks’ Association (IBA) and each of the 21 participating Public Sector Banks of India. Any individual who aspires to join any of the Public Sector Banks as a Probationary Officer (PO) therefore, will be necessarily required to take the Common Written Examination (CWE) that is conducted by the IBPS.
