I swear to tell the truth... but my fingers were crossed!

I swear to tell the truth... but my fingers were crossed!
Who doesn't know the phrase that is used in some form or another as an oath prior to giving testimony. In the business world testimony is what we more commonly know as advertising. I tell you something and you believe me and buy the product or service, simple right?
The questions I want put to you are...
*"Do you honestly believe what you are told in the advertising that bombards you all day long or do you expect to be lied to?"
*"Do you think it's OK to lie, cheat etc to people in order to achieve a goal?"
Recently I ran across a person who tried to raise awareness about a horrible reality that is all to often hidden and rarely goes unpunished... Child abuse. Personally it is something that I feel very strongly about and take every opportunity to make understood to others that this is something that must be stopped.
But how does this relate to advertising? Well quite simply the person used a photo from 2002 of a 2 year old child recovering after having been horribly attacked and badly mauled by a dog. This picture was then used to spin a tale about a vindictive mother who lashed out and killed her child after it had written "I love you on the bed sheets" with the mothers lipstick.
An incredibly heart wrenching story had it been true. Unfortunately the creator of the fairy tale missed a few points.
#1.There are few 2 year old's who can write in any manner that is clear and legible to adults.
#2. The picture had been published with the real story 9 years ago and there are those who will recognize it and know the truth from the fabrication and say so.
#3. The picture depicts wounds that are stitched and healing... this was not a dead child.
Lies and fabrications and are fine in fiction or in rags like the National Enquirer but as a means of communication they are useless as they detract from the issue at had, in this particular case it was child abuse and the raising of awareness.
What really floored me is that this person who spread this around defended their actions by declaring that was the way advertising worked and it was ok to spin a tale if it served a purpose.
HUH?
Call me blunt but I suggested an education in advertising. Guess what I got back...
"I have an education in advertising. (Advertising 101 -- you might want to take the course -- I aced it). There is a fine line in terms of what constitutes appropriate advertising. One person's lies are another person's attention grabbers. One persons's business proposal is another person's scam."
"If the pic "grabs people's attention" concerning this issue -- then it worked! And if the story makes people think twice in their dealings with children - then it worked! In fact -- if just one child is spared abuse as the result of someone seeing this ad on my wall or anyone else's wall -- then the so-called "lies" were worth it. If you don't agree.--(edited)"
WOW... what can I say to that?
