I AM A TRUE CONSERVATIVE AND A TRUE LIBERAL

Most people are not true conservatives or true liberals. When people say they are conservative, are they referring to social issues or fiscal issues. When I say I am a true conservative and a true liberal, I mean that I am a true conservative on fiscal issues and a true liberal on social issues.

A True Fiscal Conservative

A good fiscal conservative is one who establishes firm control over fiscal matters-money matters or believes in such control. This does not mean that you control some fiscal matters but not others as many politicians do. It does not mean that you drop some programs and create other programs as some politicians do. What it means is the execution of all budget matters in a responsible manner making sure that only the bare minimum of funds are used or authorized to meet the mission of the established program. In the land of politics, a conservative might claim he’s a conservative because he wishes to eliminate a social program such as the Department of Education while authorizing an unlimited budget for the Department of Defense. That’s not a true conservative. Many times, conservative values get mixed in with personal desires. Again, in the world of politics, a conservative politician may wish to retain a useless military base because it’s in his district. That’s not a true conservative. He may also wish to appropriate millions of dollars for a bridge to nowhere because it’s in his district (while opposing another politician’s pet project in that politician’s district). That’s not a true conservative. My claim to being a true conservative is based on the principle of executing tight budgets that fit the mission and exercising control over the expenditure of funds to get the job done without surrendering one’s position for political or other reasons.

A True Social Liberal

When people say they are liberal or conservative, they often mean on social issues (as oppose to fiscal issues). Being liberal “of freedom” tends to mean one is willing to change his outlook or his views and accept new concepts as conditions change. In the world of politics and religion, the conservative view is to stick with the old that has worked in the past. Liberal views tend to want to look at new ideas and concepts as technology and conditions evolve. Biblical teachings often influence the conservatives whereas the liberal person will want to be more progressive in his thinking as new ways of doing things evolve. In other word, liberals are more willing to change with changing times. My claim to being a true liberal (yes, I am a scholar of the scientific world) is to take a look at the old (much from biblical learning) and the new (from scientific discoveries, technologic changes and environmental influences), and adapt those changes that I feel will make me a better person as I help to influence others on the merits of my liberal beliefs.
