The water trickles down through the media, past the roots of the leafy plants before draining back into the fish tanks. The plants feed on the extracted nutrients they require to grow and also cleaning the water of the fish to grow. The bacteria in the grow beds comprise gravel, clay pebbles and forms on floating rafts on the water surface.
