“What do you think when you hear the word “Slavery”? Do you imagine scenes of people stolen from Africa and then being forced to work in cotton fields in the United States? Do you also believe that slavery ended more than a hundred years ago? Well, think again. Slavery is happening right now. It is taking place in almost every country of the world. In fact, there is a good chance that modern-day slaves live not so far from where you live. According to human trafficking stats from the report of U.S state department, Human Trafficking is one of the greatest human rights challenges of this century around the globe”. (From the Book - Human Trafficking By Joyce Hart).

I was just wandering around the web and gathering Information about Human Trafficking, reading different reports and statistics compiled by United Nations Organization, United States - Department of State (Trafficking in Persons Report) and many others. And caught myself in a shock that human trafficking is one of the biggest problems that we are facing around the world.

Human Trafficking Statistics

A Synopsis of Global Human Trafficking Statistics:

  • Human trafficking covers a money laundering facet of over US$32 billion per year (ILO)
  • Human trafficking is the fastest growing criminal industry worldwide
  • 80% of trafficking victims are women and girls
  • 50% of trafficking victims are minors (underage)
  • 42% of those recruiting victims are women
  • The average age of entry into prostitution or sexual exploitation is 12 years old

After seeing these horrendous human trafficking statistics, I was in tears and my Whole body was shaking like there is an Earthquake rattled me with the highest magnitude. Weather we talk about United States of America and European Countries which are the most developed countries around the world or we talk about the third world countries in Asia or Africa. All the seven continents are hit by such demonic threat to human race and multicultural society.

Human Trafficking is Equal to Modern Day Slavery – It’s a Cruelty on Verge

How Human Traffickers are ruining the Lives of Innocent People – Let’s have a look!

The human traffickers and human smugglers are targeting people from countries which are very poor, where people have no money to even support themselves or even their family and kids. In such circumstances, the people are trying to do everything they can to bring food back on the table.

Tapping into that opportunity, human trafficking criminals are creating a mass destruction to the innocent poor employment seeking persons. Sophisticated human traffickers use their own immigration system to entrap those people.

They use third party contractors which are also known as CONTRATISTAS in some countries. Contratistas recruit people for companies there in United States to work. And they charge them thousands of dollars, 5000$ to 20000$ for a visa.

People from migrating countries don’t have that amount of money so they mortgage everything they own. And when they come to United States on the work visa they are tied to that employer who employed him, so that means if they want to leave or quit the job, they automatically became out of status, illegal and UN-documented.

This is an enormous amount of control that employer have over workers that is also knows as Debt Bondage and this is all happening in America. More than 25000 people are trafficked into America each year (mostly Women and Children) and millions around the globe.

The international labor organization warned that global financial crisis is staging a dangerous situation for forced labor and sex. The poor are becoming more destitute and more vulnerable than ever.

What I have learnt After Seeing a Brutal Picture of Human Trafficking:

All what I have found that people are addressing the issue quite clearly as they know all how it’s happening, where it is happening, what are the causes etc. But they are not actually providing solutions to a Problem which is Worth Solving.

Millions of people have been trafficked each year and bounded to Modern way of slavery. Men, Women even Children are becoming slaves’ in-terms of labor trafficking, sex trafficking, Involuntary Servitude, Debt Bondage. You can name every bad thing and they are caught in it.

Although the Socioeconomic situation around the world is depriving, and there are very less options to come of that dilemma, but still there is Always a SOLUTION to a Problem and we just to need to focus on that.

The Question Arises that “WHAT CAN WE DO ABOUT HUMAN TRAFFICKING?”

Solution:

  1. Learn about human trafficking and anti human trafficking programs and Educate Others. Follow United Nations Organization programs to fight human trafficking.
  2. Look for the Signs and indicate trafficking in persons to the people.
  3. Start a Revolution to End this Social Crime once forever, because drop by drop an ocean forms and by the power of ocean, you can bring a tsunami of change and an end to human trafficking.

Defeating human trafficking is a great moral calling of the day. Together with Global allies and friends, we can strengthen the efforts to bring this cruel practice to an end. Start a new abolitionist movement and let people know around you that there is a solution. Together we can make a difference, and together we can build a safer, freer, and more prosperous world for all.
