The last part of your dissertation or thesis is the conclusion. The last thing that your reader will see is the conclusion, so it should be memorable. Its main purposes are clearly stating the main answer of the research question and explaining to the readers what is discussed and why it’s so important. It also summarizes and reflects on the research that you have done.

Writing a thesis conclusion

1. Discussion vs conclusion

First of all, you should know the difference between discussion and conclusion. Most of the time, students mess up these terms and think they are the same. While, the conclusion and the discussion do contain the same elements, and are sometimes combined. But, they are not the same thing, and the difference between them is quite obvious.

A discussion of a thesis or a dissertation is an in-depth exploration of the results. It goes into detail about the meaning of your research commonly involves information about the methods and data used in finding the answers.

A conclusion is quite different from the discussion. It is more shorter and general than the discussion and it concisely answers the main research question of your research. It restates the abstract, every issue, discovery, and the results of your research by using different words.

2. Length of the conclusion

The length of the conclusion mostly depends on the size or type of your thesis. Most of the time, it covers around 6-9% of your thesis length. It needs to be long enough to get your point clear and short enough that you are not repeating every idea that you have had on the subject.

3. Answer the research question

The conclusion of your thesis should begin with the main question that your thesis aimed to answer. You should not repeat the entire list of results but should synthesize them into a final takeaway that your reader will remember. At times. It’s a good idea to read some samples so that you can understand how to answer the research question properly.

4. Restate and summarize the thesis

Restating and summarizing your work is the main objective of the conclusion. It is an opportunity that you can use to tell the reader the reason that you took the approach you did, what did you expect to find, and how well the results matched your expectations. Restating and summarizing does not mean just copy and paste it from the introduction. You will have to change the wording and structure so that you do not sound repetitive. You should also address your final thoughts directly to your reader. The most important thing that you should highlight is the points that clearly state the answer to the main question of the project. This includes telling the reader about what was studied, what were the results, and why was it important.

5. Make recommendations

The next stage of writing a conclusion of your thesis or dissertation is to give recommendations. You might have already made recommendations in your discussion., but the conclusion is a better place to further give more information about them and look ahead, thinking about the implication of your discoveries for theory and practice. Others might want to know how your research contributes to finding a solution to the problem. You should provide recommendations that are specific and connected to your conclusions.

6. Emphasize Your Contribution

It is necessary to make sure that your reader is left with a strong impression by giving a track of contribution to the project that you have written. You should explain why your thesis is relevant to your field of research. You should avoid repeating what you have already written in the discussion section and should write down the most important points of your research and then summarize them with an overview.

7. Finish your thesis

Once that you have finished writing the conclusion, the final step that is left is to finish your thesis. You should analyze  the whole thesis from the first chapter to the last and should also make sure that there are no grammatical mistakes in your thesis.
