How to Wash Your Horse Blankets?

by Md Rahman Digital Marketer Expert
Horse blankets may need to be cleaned before being packed for the summer. If your horse blanket is particularly messy when in use during the cold months, it may also need to be washed. It is not recommended to throw horse blankets in the home washers without first preparing. Most household machines are not made to handle the amount of dirt and hair that falls off blankets when they are washed.
Material may be too heavy for original washers to rotate when wet. Wash horse blankets could also cause pipe problems, which could back-up horsehair and mud coming out of horse blankets. If your budget does not require dry cleaning or professionally cleaning your horse blankets, then you may want to try hand washing them at home. Some lighter weight blankets can fit in washing machines.

Instructions

1 Decide if your washing machine can handle the blanket or not. If it is a lighter weight blanket, such as a show sheet, then you may be able to wash as you would with your normal clothing. Make sure there is not much room for the blanket to rotate around or all the dirt will not be removed. You may want to run the horse blanket through two rinse cycles to make sure all of the soap is washed.

2 Hang the heaviest blankets on a fence. Use a shedding blade to remove as much horsehair as possible. Next, use a stiff brush to brush off any dirt and fur left outside the horse blanket. Don't put heavier, thicker, or bigger blankets in your washing machine. If in doubt, wash by hand.

3 Hose down the blanket with clean, cold water. Coldwater should be used to wash horse blankets as it reduces the chance that the blanket will shrink, and it does not break down the fabric as quickly.

4 Scrub the horse blanket with a detergent that is or for sensitive skin, if possible, fragrance-free. Rinse the blanket with cold water until the water runs off the blanket is clean, without soap suds or dirt.

5 Let that blanket to dry completely before folding for storage.

Tips and Warnings

Be sure to dry the horse blanket completely before folding and storing it, or it can get moldy during the summer months. Store it in a safe place, such as in the trunk of a tack - away from mice. more info
