NAT/Route and Transparent are the
two operational modes for FortiGate hardware. NAT/Route mode is the most used
operating mode. In this configuration, the FortiGate device is installed to assist
as a gateway or as a router between two networks. Typically, it is employed to
link a private network to the Internet. As a result, the IP addresses of the
private network can be hidden by the FortiGate using network address
translation. The gns3
juniper images are also used when more than one Internet service
provider (ISP) will be used to offer the FortiGate with redundant Internet
connections.
A FortiGate device is set up and
deployed in Transparent mode between the internal network and the router. In
this mode, the FortiGate just performs security scanning on traffic and ignores
IP addresses. When it is added to any network in some Transparent mode, the
only system adjustment mandatory is to allocate it a management IP address.
Transparent mode is often used when it is necessary to improve network security
but it is impractical to change the configuration of the network as a whole.
Installation of FortiGate
There are two types of FortiGate
installations: normal installations that only have one Internet service
provider offering Internet access and redundant deployments that have multiple
ISPs. Choosing which internal Switch mode your FortiGate should be using is the
first step in both installations.
