How to Use Gospels in Your Everyday Life

by Tell Them That I Love Them Living in the Power of the Spirit

As you know, the gospels are the documentation of the life of Christ and all that it entailed. They may be some of the most useful parts of the Bible simply because the best way to teach someone something is to lead them by example. Since the gospels depict specific examples of what Jesus actually did, they are sometimes the closest you can get to a conversation with Jesus. The gospels allow you to experience living in the power of the spirit through example and beautifully crafted writing so that you don't have to experience a lecture to learn about the life of Jesus or to be able to develop a faith that allows you to live a healthy, faithful lifestyle. To make the most of the gospels, you should use them as part of your everyday life. Some examples of how you might do that are listed below.

Strike up a conversation with Jesus. This might sound like an impossible task, but you have to remember that there is more than one way to communicate. Jesus communicates with you every day if you just pay attention. You can use the gospels as a way to understand some of the answers to your questions or as a starting point to ask a question. In fact, you will find that through most of the gospels, Jesus offers an underlying “tell them that I love them” theme that can answer just about any question you have.

Have a morning reflection. Jesus had one main message to offer. “Tell them that I love them” is a common theme through every part of his life. He promoted acceptance and love from every possible angle. When you think about using the gospels as a morning reflection, don't think about them in terms of what heavy concepts there are. The gospels are a reflection of the life of Jesus and as such, they are full of love. Yes, they will give you something to think about as you make your way through the day, but they should also fill you with a sense of being loved and accepted. What better way is there to start your day, every day?

Answer your questions with a gospel. If you are experiencing times that leave you with multiple questions, the best way toward resolution lies in living in the power of the spirit. Living in the power of the spirit lets you remember that you are never alone and that no burden will ever be put upon you that is too heavy for you to carry. When your mind turns to conflict, try looking at one of the gospels. As you read them, imagine what such a person would do if placed in your shoes. You might see a parallel theme between the gospels and your own life or you might just see a concept that makes your decision easier to grasp. Either way, you can usually find the answers to the questions you ask when you look to the gospels for inspiration and learning.
