How to Use Glass Glue for Repair Works?
Before discussing the process of using glass glue for repair works, let us explain what this glue type actually is. Glass glue is basically a UV curable or light curing adhesive designed for offering precision bonding. These bonding agents are widely used by glassware manufacturing companies, optical device makers, medical equipment manufacturers, glass repair shops, car repair shops and so on. There are certain features that make glass glue indispensable for these companies; they are:
· Ability to cure rapidly
· High transparency
· Long shelf-life when stored at room temperature
· Amazing gap-filling ability
· They come in specially designed containers to enable precise application
· Ability to offer strong bonds on plastics, metal, ceramics and of course glass
Now, let us come to the actual topic of this article. To repair broken glass, you will need to apply a thin layer of glass glue onto the chipped or cracked glass. The amount of adhesive you will need to use for rejoining two glass surfaces, on the other hand, will be slightly more. To cure the glue, you will need to expose the treated surface directly to ultraviolet light; this is the reason why this bonding agent is referred to as UV curable adhesive. The bond you will get once the glue cures completely will be strong enough to last for several years. The look of the treated area will remain intact as the glue becomes almost invisible once cured.
For completing this repair work perfectly, you will need a few items; they are a couple of standard lamps, a couple of 160 watt ultraviolet light bulbs, lint-free cloth, an ammonia-based spray for glass cleaning, rubber gloves, wooden block, razor blade, and a paintbrush with synthetic bristle. You can also use clamps if required.
You should begin by cleaning the surface of the broken or cracked glass using the ammonia-based spray. Use the lint-free cloth to wipe the glass. We would advise you to wear a pair of rubber gloves when doing this job. This will ensure that you complete the job without hurting yourself.
Screw the bulbs into the sockets of the lamps. Lay both the lamps down on their sides and support the parts that are closest to the bulbs using the wooden lock. Take a drop of the glass glue and apply it onto the broken area using the paintbrush. The layer of glue applied should be thin and even. Now, press the two parts gently; this will squeeze the excess glue out.
Plug in the ultraviolet lamps and turn the switch on. Hold the repaired glass structure within 2 inches of the lamps and wait for 5 minutes. If required, you can use clamps for holding the structure. After 5 minutes, you will find that the adhesive has dried completely.
