How to Troubleshoot No Sound Issues on Your Windows 10 PC?

by Emily Johnson Technical Advisor

You have just browsed a video game or a movie, but everything seems silent. You checked the volume level, but every volume is set to the highest level. So what is causing these issues? What happened to the audio of your device? Let’s configure it.

Is there no sound coming from your Windows 10 laptop or PC? Well, if that’s the case, then you have come to the right place. In this article, we are going to fix no sound issues on Windows 10.

Fix 1: Check if the Volume is Mute

It can be very frustrating when there is no sound coming out of your device. In such cases, you should check the most common things at first, such as volume level and muted volume. Follow the instruction mentioned below:

  1. Look at the small speaker icon located at the bottom-right corner of your PC’s screen.
  2. Now check if there is an X symbol located in the front of the speaker or volume icon.
  3. If the X symbol is placed next to the Volume icon, then click on the volume icon.
  4. Now move the volume slider to the highest level by dragging it towards the right directions.

If you are using any specific media player to play your favorite movies and videos, then also check its volume.

Fix 2: Check for the Installed Audio Devices

If you have installed or connected more than audio devices to your computer, then check that the computer is sending the audio signals to the right device. For example, if you have paired wireless headphones with your Windows 10 PC and also connected External wired speakers with your PC, then the device will send the signals to only one device. To manage this, go to the Volume icon located on the right side of the system tray. Now click on the currently selected audio device and change the audio signals to the device from which you want to listen.

Fix 3: Checking Settings in Control Panel

  1. Go to the Control Panel on your Windows 10 PC.
  2. To open it, simply open the Start Menu by clicking on the Windows key on your keyboard.
  3. Then type “Control Panel” and then select the Control Panel from the results.
  4. Navigate to the “hardware and Sound” option.
  5. Now click on the Sound option.
  6. There you can see the Sound settings. Check that your audio device is set as default. If the device is not set as default, then set it as default.
  7. To set it as set as default, click on the device that you are using currently with your desktop or laptop and then choose the set default option from the bottom.
  8. Press the OK button to save your configuration.

Fix 4: Launch the Troubleshooter

Windows 10 provides an inbuilt troubleshooting tool that is capable of inspecting the whole device for a problem, and it also recommends the solutions. Follow the guidance given below to fix windows ten audio issues:

  1. Press the Start key on your keyboard and then search for “find and fix audio playback problems,” and then the first option that has the same title.
  2. The audio troubleshooter will appear on your display. The program will scan for the sound issues. Once the scan completes, choose the device which you want to fix.
  3. Press the Next button.
  4. Now the scan will begin, and the system will tell you if there are any technical issues with your device. If the system suggests any troubleshooting instructions, then follow them to solve the no sound problem.

Fix 5: Restarting Audio Services on Windows 10

Here’s how to reboot the windows audio service on windows 10:

  1. Go to the Start Menu and then type Services.
  2. Now select the Services option that has a gear icon.
  3. In the Services windows, you need to restart three services to reboot the whole audio services of your device. The services that you need to restart are mentioned here:
    1. Windows Audio
    2. Remote Procedure Call (RPC)
    3. Windows Audio Endpoint Builder
  4. To restart these services one by one, find the service first and then right-click on the service that you want to restart.
  5. Then simply choose the restart option to restart a service.
  6. Do the same for all three audio services mentioned above.

Note if the restart button is faded, then click on the refresh option instead of restart.
