As dogs owners probably know, without having a spacious back yard it is almost impossible to truly hold on to a dog without going on regular walks together. Even if you do have a spacious yard, your dog will be very unhappy if it doesn't get to investigate new horizons, together with you. The first thing you should do is to choose dog lead that will suit the kind of dog you have. There are several thing you need to consider before making a purchase.

The size of the dog is the most important factor when you choose dog lead, logically, if the dog is stronger and larger you'll need a thicker lead that has the ability to be made more short, depending on the occasion, because large dogs can intimidate people and sometimes you'll need to keep your dog closer to yourself.

The Way It's Done

Dogs are very intelligent creatures that operate on the basis of association. Before you take your dog on a walk, make sure that you create a positive association with the lead. For instance, let the dog smell the lead while at home and do not put it on it yet. After it smells it and shoes curiosity, give him some treats so that it will remember that the lead means positive emotions. You do not need to take your dog on a walk immediately that day. Repeat the same activity the next day and then slowly put the lead on your dog while patting him at the same time. If the dog reacts negatively to it, just start being playful and do not push your will on him.

Once you manage to get the leash on your dog, go for a short walk outside. Don't expect too much obedience the first few times, since the dog will still be in the phase of getting used to the new routine. After the short walk, once you enter the house, reward your dog with some treats it loves so that it knows that the experience was positive.

If you follow these steps and never fail to be patient and loveable, you will witness your dog taking the leash in its mouth and coming to you with those puppy eyes we all adore, begging you to take him for a walk to the park. Don't forget to adjust the leash to give your dog the freedom its needs, especially when there are not many people around, and finally -walk, run and have fun!
