How to take screenshots on your Mac, Windows PC

by Tech Perx Digital Marketing

Each major operating system -- Windows, macOS Android, iOS, and Android -- has one or more ways to capture screenshots. This is a quick guide on how to take screenshots in each of the four operating systems.

SCREENSHOTS ON A MAMAC

The current versions of macOS (Mojave, Catalina) include a Screenshot app. You can access it by pressing Shift/Command.

You can also check how to activate windows 7 without product key

A command bar will appear that allows you to select various options. You can either take a screen shot, a selection or all of your screen. You can choose where to save your screenshot and set a delay. Once you are satisfied, click the "Capture” button at the end of the command line.

You can save screenshots to your desktop in PNG format if you have not upgraded to Mojave/Catalina.

  • To capture the screen in its entirety, press Shift+Command-3
  • To capture a portion of your screen, press Shift/Command-4 and drag the cursor around to mark the area.
  • To capture a specific window press Shift/Command-4. Hit the spacebar. The cursor will transform into a camera. Click on the image you wish to capture by hovering the cursor above the window.

SCREENSHOTS ON A Windows 10 PC

Depending on your system, you may be able take a screenshot by simultaneously pressing the Windows logo key and the PrtScrn or PrtSc key (which are usually at the right end the function key row). You can also try the Fn or Ctrl keys to make it work. The image will be saved as a PNG file in the "Pictures > Screenshots" folder.

If this doesn't work (I found it refused to take a screenshot for half of the times I tried), you can hit Windows + Shift + S to open a Windows app called "Snip & Sketch." The app can also be accessed from your Windows app menu. The cursor will change into a plus sign and you'll see a toolbar at top of screen. This allows you to select either a rectangle clip or a freeform one. You can also take a picture of the entire screen. You will see a thumbnail in the lower left corner of your screen. To edit the photo or save it as a PNG or JPG file, click on it.

You can also bring up the snipping tools by hitting the Windows key, starting to type "snip", or entering "snip" in the Cortana search field.

If you wish, you can make the PrtSc key bringup Snip & Sketch by pressing it.

  • Click the Start button at the bottom left corner of your computer to access the settings. Next, click the gear icon above.
  • Type "prtscn" in the search box below "Windows Settings" page title. A drop-down menu will appear around the "t", and you'll see a selection that reads "Use Print Screen key for screen snipping." Click it.
  • You will find yourself on "Keyboard" page. You will find the "Print Screen shortcut" button and you can toggle it on.

SCREENSHOTS ON A ANDROID PHONE

You can take a screenshot from your Android screen in one of two ways (assuming that you have Android 9/10).

  • Hold down the power button. A pop-up window will appear on the right side. It contains icons that allow you to power off, reboot, call an emergency number or take a screen shot. Or...
  • Hold the power button down and then press the volume-down key.

You can share, edit or delete the screenshot in any way you like.

You should look out for this: Certain Android phones, such as certain Samsung and Huawei phones, allow you to take "long" photos. This means you can scroll down the screen and capture the entire page. If you suspect you may have this feature, check your support pages. It can be very useful.

You can find all of your previous screenshots here:

  • Go to your Photos app.
  • Tap the three parallel lines at the top left corner.
  • Select "Device folders" > "Screenshots."

SCREENSHOTS ON A IPHONE

It is easy and straightforward to take a picture with your iPhone.

  • You can simultaneously press the volume-up and side buttons. You can press both the volume-up and side buttons simultaneously on older iPhones that have a Home button.
  • In the lower left corner, you'll see a thumbnail of your screenshot.
  • To make the image larger, tap on it. There will be editing tools down below. The icons in the upper right corner allow you to delete it or share.
  • Tap "Done" at the top left corner when you are done. You can save the image as Photos, Files or delete it.
